I think what I have interpreted as a flat lifter or mis adjusted rocker is actually an exhaust leak. I found some loose exhaust studs/ bolts and black junk at the joint. I tightened all that I could and warmed it up and the ticking is definitely less to non existent at start up (cold) but still lingers when warm.

also the lifter I found not pumped up has been been fine the last two times i checked it.

watcha' yall think?

It's no surprise that the engine is making less noise after you tightened down a loose exhaust pipe. That may have been all that you needed to do. But you are asking about a slight ticking noise that you still hear? Do you have a high-mileage waterboxer?

There are lots of worn or mis-adjusted parts that might make a ticking noise in a running engine. And even the most experienced mechanic's ear will have a hard time diagnosing a noise over the internet, via typed text.

Take your time and use common sense to figure out what it might be.

You can track down a noise with a broomstick or metal rod to act as a "stethescope." With the engine running CAREFULLY place one end of your stick against part of the engine (careful to avoid the belts and any moving part of the engine), and place your ear to the other end of the stick to hear the magnified noise. By moving the stick to different locations on the case, cylinder head, and valve cover, you can determine where it is loudest (where it's coming from) and what it sounds like (what it might be).

Please take your time and be safe with this method of diagnosis.
