i bought a box of random vw parts in a box for $50, got some baby webers in great shape out of it Very Happy some nice dual port heads, and other random stuff but came across this piece, what is it, i have no clue. probably off some late model possibly?

I don't know what it is called, but the part is from a Solex carb that attaches off to the side of it.

Sorry don't know the model of Solex, maybe a 34 pict?

Hopefully a carb expert will chime in.

Smog part. I think they started using those in 73 or 74.

It is a throttle positioner, added around '70 or so, for smog control. That arm held the throttle open even after you took your foot off the gas (exciting coming up to stoplights!).

That one looks like the style used with the 30PICT-2, you can see such a one in this page from a 1968 Owner's manual:

Bingo! later models has a two-piece unit that did the same thing.

By now the diaphragm is probably bad, and they were a PITA even when new. You might place an ad in the classified; maybe someone really wants a vintage engine look?

thanks, i knew it something to do with the carb, but i wasnt sure what Smile the diaphragm is still good. all the parts i got are in really good shape, cant beat that for $50 Very Happy

It was used to slow the closing of the butterfly so all the gas would be burned. Set up right you can't tell the difference.
