Ok so I have been planning on building a 40hp vintage speed engine. My plans are to install a Fram oil filter, dual solex carbs with Vintage okrasa/Knecht air filters. I am going to upgraid the engine to 12v but am going to make the 12v coil look like a 6v. I plan on leaving it single port but dont know if I should go dual port. Anyways I was wondering if this sounds like a good setup. Would the MPG be better or worse, I dont have a lead foot.

Hi there!

Welcome to the 40 horse of glory club... Wink

For this engine you have several options, but in my eye 6V and singleport is the real deal....

Choose a cam, do some headwork, perhaps build an handmade exhaust with header......and have fun!

Depending on the plans you have!

Horses or spirit.....

For horses dual ports (what will make the decision on carbs not easier)

For the real oldschool spirit single ports....

You decide!

Ok for sure I am now going single port. What carbs should I run. I am looking for some carbs that will run good and fit my Knecht air filters.

I have found single port engines (1600) seem to get better gas mileage than dual port (1600) in my split window buses ('61 and '65). I don't have a lot of experience with 40 horse motors though.
