One of the most important things I look for in a vendor is how the vendor handles problems. Nobody is 100% dead- on perfect all the time. Mistakes get made. Even if a customer is "unreasonable" (which was certainly not the case here), retaliatory unreasonableness from the vendor in the hot seat never looks good, IMHO.

It's good to see that Don's attitude is changing and he sees the light. Let's hope that things progress from there. This hobby needs all the good, reliable vendors it can get!

This is so wrong. I think everyone knows that rust always flakes off. Iron oxide is extremely abrasive. To knowingly leave abrasive material inside a gearbox is shear incompetence. That abrasive grit will get into the bearings and destroy them. It will also get caught in the gear teeth, wearing them out.
If he thinks leaving rust in there is ok, he might as well be throwing a handfull of sand in there too.

Dons stance I believe ,and I actually agree with, is that the rust you see is actually from Iron particles that soak into the aluminum casting along with the oil since it is somewhat porous and have met with water from some source and then when the oil was forced out by the water oxidized(rusted) those particles left behind. I agree that those embedded particles will not likely break free. That rust is only dislodged from brushing or blasting. The issue was ,and IMO is, that the condition left other aspects suspect. Would I leave it in there though? Not in a million years.

Wouldn't the magnet plug catch any micro size rust particles?
If the nose cone has to be soda blasted to get clean, would it really come loose?

Mr. porsche designed a very strong and durable transmission . If this transmission fails because of this surface rust, its not a volkswagen!

Gonenomad nor myself ever said there was concern about the rust seen causing a trans failure.THe issue is and was what else may have been rusted that would possibly cuase issues such as rust pitted gears that could not be seen without disassembly. Simple.Justified.

My last word on this since Don is apparently taking care of gonenomad. Give Don a chance to show improvement. That's only fair.

I received a partial refund from Don via paypal today.

Don took care of the problem and everything is good now.

I have asked Everett to add a sentence to the first post with information to the effect that Don made things right.

I also use part of the partial refund to make a donation in both both my and Don's names to TheSamba.

I own a VW Restoration and Repair Shop and one of my good customers asked me to install an 002 transaxle in his 70 Westy. He said that Don's Bus Box had the best price on the trans. I was asked to call Don and talk to him about the trans and on how to get it to me. Long story short, the customer didn't want to spend the extra money to have the trans brought up to me and to have the core taken back for Don to inspect. The customer showed up at my Shop with the rebuilt trans and also his core stating that Don told him the ring and pinion were bad in his original trans and that he would not take it as a core. I am by no means an expert on transaxles and I purchase all mine from another rebuilder here in Arizona. I filled the trans on the bench and I noticed that it was in gear. I put the trans in neutral and after I removed my homemade tool to manually shift the trans I noticed that there were no studs in the nose cone for the mount plate. The top hole needed to have a tap run through it and the bottom hole was just that, a hole. I installed a 10 mm Time Sert and then a new stud. Other than that the trans seems to work well. I have yet to hear anything back from my customer on how it shifts or sounds like once going down the road.

ATTENTION:
When I was looking up VW Transaxle auctions on Ebay I thought I was looking at my own ads, turns out DONSBUSBOX stole my pictures!
The picture in my listing, Item number: 380336982917 ...
is the picture he took and used in Item number: 180684677231

But that's not all, he also took 2 other pictures from my ads and used them in: Item number: 180684685340
AND
Item number: 180684681898

Those are MY listings, Item number: 380336983294
AND
Item number: 380336979875
I saw that yesterday, painted a red Maltese cross on my 3 rib and uploaded fresh pictures of it. I'm thinking of doing other stuff to my transaxles that nobody else can replicate just so that he doesn't steal anymore of my pictures.

The red and silver car in the background is my 1974 custom VW Beetle with a Wunderbug 1937 Ford front end. MY CAR is pictured behind the transaxles.

DONSBUSBOX not only stole my pictures and listing details, he also harasses me using different Ebay user names.
I reported him to Ebay and I will be following up my report with yet another phone call, making this the 4th time I had to call Ebay to report this guy...

PostPosted: Tue Sep 13, 2011 11:55 am    Post subject: rebuilt trannies- 2 bad ones out of three aint good- Reply with quote

Mr. Don, Sometimes it doesnt pay to shop price. As u know I sent 3 trans down to u to be rebuilt with 2 of them changing to fwy flyers. Your prices were exceptionally good (too good to be true, it seems). When tran 1 was installed and I was test driving, from the very 1st shift it popped out of 2nd gear and did that the entire test drive of about 30 miles. I told u about it and after apologising and promising to pay freight both ways to repair it we installed trans 2. Never got it out of the shop. We couldnt find reverse or 3rd and 4th gears Sad . We dont feel safe in even trying the 3rd tranny. After speaking with another trans rebuilder from Bend, OR that I have been using for many years AND having to run a 8mm tap into all the output flange bolt holes that were rusted up, not like the trannies we sent to you, we feel that u must have shipped the wrong trannies to us. Are u sure you got my trans from the REBUILT PILE or were these on an outdoor shelf waiting to be done???? Under the circumstances I want to get my money back from u for the entire job, $1150 plus $230 s/h for a total of $ 1380.00. Obviously I am going to have to have these trannies done again, but not at your shop. I am getting together with Ken and will send the trannies up to him to be repaired and the one we have not tried just checked out before we use it. Not only is Ken going to repair the 2 bad ones he is going to document with pictures what he finds wrong with the first 2 we tried. I am retaining the adresses and phone numbers of the BBB in your town as well as your State Bureau of automotive repair. If necessary I will instigate a claim against your shop with the Calif B A R. and your states BAR. Being partially retired after 38 years of vw service, I do have plenty of time to get all my ducks in line to go after you big time. I do not wish to do this, but you must be ok with the refund I am asking, it seems fair to me after all THE FIRST TWO TRANNIS WERE BAD. Please mail me a check for the $1380. and we will be done with each other. Thank you, Bill Taylor, Bill's VW Repair, Eureka, CA.

I do not use the Samba for resolving customer service issues. If you have experienced any issues with any of the work we did for you please ship the trans back to me for inspection and correction if needed. If the trans are found to be defective we will refund your shipping costs.

Bill Taylor I wish you the best of luck and know exactly what your talking about! I have seen 2 of don's top built 091's tore down now and wow!! old bearing still full of sludge, silicone instead of gaskets, rtv instead of lock tite and the list goes on and on.

to all, no matter what any trans builder says, stock r&p's are not stronger than weddles high perfomance r&p's!
