O.k. I'm actively working on my heater. It looks good. I've checked everything. Even spark plug looks 5 by 5.

So... fuel supply. I do not have an original tank in my Thing. I just checked the original though, and it doesn't look any different than the one in it now.

I'm working alone, and I need to make sure my thought process is in the right orbit.

Plan on doing it like this:

- With low fuel in tank, remove it.

- Find fuel line for heater (it does go down through the trunk). Replace as necessary.

- Check fuel pump for heater. Replace if necessary.

- install "T" off of fuel tank.

- Button up, fuel up, take out side and try to fire up.

Do you see any missed steps? I'm pretty task oriented and I'd like to do this right the first time.

It sure would be nice to have heat in my Thing soon. Winter is coming.

Hey BmwLoco,

from what I know on these so far, that sounds right, my heater dont work either but it is all hooked up.

I can supply a photo if you think it would help with your connections.

Mine has the Tee off the tank, with a fuel filter to the heaters fuel pump.

As a test (once your'e done)you could turn it on and see if the heaters fuel pump squirts gas prior to running the fuel line to the heater, I belive its 30 revs of the fan to 1 squirt of gas so it will be a pulse instead of a constant flow.

Yall correct me if i'm wrong, I've been reading up on this stuff as I have to take on the same project.

I may be a few weeks behind you but would be glad to offer any photos if you think it will help ya.

Have fun, good luck.
T.

Another question: where does the fuel for the heater come from?

Is there a "T" valve off the bottom of the tank?

Photos? Parts source?

Yes there is a t-fuel line, not so much a valve, and you should plan on changing the fuel filter,
it attaches to the body just before the pump.
I have some t's and other heater parts

What brand of gas heater do you have? South Wind or Eberspacher?

I have a picture of the set up bmwloco, it's after I pulled the tank, so everything looks cruddy. I have a large version of the photo if you'd like a larger view. I can post it tonight when I get home.

MercurialThing thanks!

Pulled the image down on my Mac and hit the "+" key. Clear as a bell. Thank you very much!

I'll be on it very soon... as soon as I find my "T" valve. I know I put it somewhere.

I need to drive the Thing more too. Full tank of fuel and all.

You're welcome. I've been thinking about simplifying the set up and putting a big fuel filter in-line just after the gas tank before the "T" fitting so I only have one filter and it takes care of both the engine and the heater. Glad I could help!

Regarding those lines, I'm sure they're supposed to be metric, but I've found that a 1/4" line fits:
- from the tank to the T
- from the T to the body
- from the T to the filter
- from the filter to the pump

And 3/16" line fits
- from the pump to the heater (about 4 foot)

Also, I like having the strait-through part of the T go from the tank to the body. That portion will have the least flow restriction and should go to the biggest fuel draw - the engine. The fuel feed that makes a 90 degree turn should go to the pump as it's got a much lower flow requirement.

I did that when I put an electric fuel pump under the tank. Here's my filter:

It has duel outputs, one to feed the pump for the engine and one to feed the pump for the heater.

Here's the bracket I built that now mounts in the area where that T was. It's bolted to the pan and just clears the right-hand tie rod.

Of course, I guess you need a monster filter for that monster Raby engine in your Thing. Some day... some day.

That's a great idea turning the "T" so the fuel goes "straight" through to the engine compartment and the "turn" feeds the gas heater. I'll be adding that change to my set up when I get my gas lines in a week or two.

I've got lots of parts coming as Christmas presents... CANNOT wait!
