If you have a birth certificate for your car, can you check your list of M codes against the list in the Archive. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/mcodeskg.php

If you have an unlisted "Cannot be Identified" or another identified M option not included on the list post the information and we'll add it to the Ghia List.

At the moment there's only one "Unknown" in the current list; "M584 Unknown - Seen on '59 Convertible."

To start the ball rolling I have one "Cannot be Identified" on the birth certificate for my April 1958 Ghia Coupe; M958.

Get searching.

As the M500s codes refer to upholstery, my seats have the black-red cloth insert. May be code M584 refers to that? Was the cloth insert an option?

I have M986 cannot be indentified on a 59 Coupe-

It also states on the birth certificate that it came with the red upholstery fabric. It doesn't list an M code for that though?

Cheers

Seth

Hi Seth,

What is the original color of your car?
What is the exact wording for the cloth insert?

Thanks!

Hi, The car is Cardinal red and the there is an * next to the wording of this on the certificate- At the bottom there is another * and it says..

*Upholstery material Red

Car is a May 59 coupe-

Hope this helps.

I just checked the forum topic "The Idiot's Guide to Original Karmann Ghia Interiors" and kgarchivinusa posted a link in german for interior upholstery:
If you can speak (and read) a little bit german, you find the right interior here:

type 14 coupe: http://www.karmann-ghia-archiv.de/farbarchivtyp14coupeinterior.html

type 14 convertible: http://www.karmann-ghia-archiv.de/farbarchivtyp14cabrioletinterior.html

from the convertible link check this:

01.08.1957 - Dezember 58 Fahrgestellnr.: 1 626 393 bis 2 270 325

Karosserie Unterteil Sitzfarben Stoff wahlweise Kunstleder
schwarz L41 585 593
perlweiß L87 584 592
diamantgrau L243 584 592
kardinalrot L354 587 595
amazonas L417 586 594
graphitsilber L428 587 592
bernina L431 590 597

Der Farbindex ist aus einer Original Farbkarte und kann leider nicht genauer aufgeschlüsselt werden.

Januar 1959 bis Juli 1959 Fahrgestellnr.:2 270 326 bis 2 528 667

Karosserie Unterteil Sitzfarben Stoff wahlweise Kunstleder
schwarz L41 585 593
perlweiß L87 584 592
diamantgrau L243 584 592
colorado L356 587 595
amazonas L417 586 594
graphitsilber L428 584 592
bernina L431 590 597

Der Farbindex ist aus einer Original Farbkarte und kann leider nicht genauer aufgeschlüsselt werden.

My UNKNOWN M code is M584 and my car is a Graphite Silver convertible!

The only thing that is still not matching is that my VIN is from December 1958 and if this table is correct it should be M587.

If this information matches youyr UNKNOW M Code please let us know!
Thanks!

Can a german speaker please translate:

"Karosserie Unterteil",
"Sitzfarben Stoff",
" Stoffbezug",
"wahlweise Kunstleder",
"Kunstlederbezug" and
"Der Farbindex ist aus einer Original Farbkarte und kann leider nicht genauer aufgeschlüsselt werden"

Thank you!

For my 74 Coupe you have the M002, M054 and M128 identified. Also on my 74 Birth Certificate is "Option D53 cannot be identified." Anyone know what that might be?

Educated guess at M 592 as seen on a Sept 58 cabrio. The M codes in the high 500s seem to have a pattern of referring to interior specific details.

My car has a beige steering wheel, steering column tube, seat frames, e-brake handle, all interior painted parts are a darker color than seen on other lowlights. These interior parts were original paint when the car was found and I'm confident they left the factory that way.

This car is also the only documented Pearl White cab to have originally come with a tan top which is listed at M 578 on my birth certificate.

Hello together,

you can find all M-codes for Karmann Ghias listed here (in German language only Wink ):
Arrow http://www.karmann-ghia-archiv.de/technikarchivmehrausstattungen.html

A click on the M-code mostly shows, what it is.

Some are also listed in English here:
