One of the first entries in this post listed an M194 additional mirror outside convex. Are the attached pictures an example of this mirror or is the mirror some type of aftermarket add-on?

The recognised accessory mirror was the "Swan Neck" mirror as in these brochure pictures:

Are there any holes in the front wing where a "Swan Neck" could have been fitted? There doesn't seem to be in the pictures you posted above.

No, there aren't any holes. That is what has me perplexed. I looked under the fender to be sure that any body holes haven't been filled. The mirror fits to the door correctly. I was watching an episode of "Wheelers Dealers" (a British car rebuilding show) and they had an episode about an early Alpha Romeo rebuild. The mirrors on that car looked very similar to mine. I wonder if the PO found one of these and just put it on?

That mirror looks very similar to the 65-66 Shelby Mustang mirror

Your's looks like a Talbot mirror. If there are no holes in the wing that would make your mirror a strong contender for a factory option. Very interesting. Very Happy

Rick Pereira added a repro Talbot to his '71 in this topic: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5975836#5975836

From what I have gleaned over the years it appears that Ghias were shipped from the factory with the fender mirror in the glove box so that it wouldn't get damaged in transport to the dealership. The dealership had to install the mirror and if you look in the back of the 52-57 Benteley manual you will find a template to install the swan neck mirror (holes were not pre-drilled from the factory). It could be that for the first few years the mirror was an option and not shipped with the car. This would explain why there are so many variations of mirrors on 56-57 Ghias. It could also be that new owners didn't want the swan neck mirror and opted for another mirror. I think that by 1960 the swan neck mirror was standard.

Does this location look correct according to your manual?

Mine:
14 November 1962

M 128 White Wall tires
M 355 US-Equipment
M 556 Upholstery leatherette Silver Beige
M 194 cannot be identified (now known as an outside convex mirror) which I do have but mine is definitely NOT convex (this would seem to me to be the "objects are closer than they appear" type?

Or is my nomenclature not correct for VW?[/img]

Thanks John I took a 3m wheel to the car today. The PO have a lot of fun pounding things in and covering with an inch of bondo. I found the mounting holes for the mirror. Found some other goodys too that you can see in my DJs 59 thread Crying or Very sad

Guys, I am wondering about M-Code 563 that is listed on my BC.
"Upholstery material / leatherette Beige"

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The Samba list has 564 "Upholstery leatherette Stone Beige", and from what I have found online, is the most complete and accurate list on the web.

Just curious if you guys think my BC is incorrect, or if this "Beige" M-Code should be added to the list. Since I believe my interior is original, here is a photo of the beige trim. Not sure how a stone beige color would differ.

Any thoughts?

That piping on the seats looks too big to be original. If the cert says beige that is what you have to go with, if you want to restore, as that is the only documentation that exist.

I wish I had mine and I could post it. It's been 6 months since I've ordered it and it's still a no show.

From august 1962 to july 1963 the Upholstery Mcode for L87 pearl white is:
M563 for 76 brick red (Upholstery - leatherette)
M554 for 61 brick red (Upholstery - cloth)

On your certificat the M563 Upholstery material / leatherette beige is wrong
It's M563 Upholstery material / leatherette brick red

For my 74 Coupe you have the M002, M054 and M128 identified. Also on my 74 Birth Certificate is "Option D53 cannot be identified." Anyone know what that might be?

Resurrecting an old thread because I too have the same listing for my '74 convertible (Ravenna Green/Black Top/Beige Leatherette).

Option D53 cannot be identified

After spending a few hours digging around the Internet, I'm wondering if this may be a reference to a walnut shifting knob. It's mentioned in the '74 sales literature as a possible option, and I've yet to find an M code that covers the shift knob. It's probably a stretch, but so far that's all I've got.

Has that code been deciphered by anyone since this thread was last updated?

My birth certificate has the following

L 32 K Phoenix Red
Upholstery leatherette Black
10 / 73
Point of Origin : Grand Rapids / USA
M 002 USA country typical sealed beam headlamps
M 054 Lockable glove box
M 128 White wall tires
D 53 cannot be identified

I will wager a guess that the D 53 is for the rear window defrost - I may/could be wrong though.

As djway3474 and GHIA have suggested, the code on the certificate appears incorrect. I have a 63 model (October 62 build) Pearl White coupe. The photos below show the original rear seat (much faded) and the door /quarter panels. It was called brick red. The blue front seats shown are the original seats recovered in the exact original style, the blue section used be the red like the back seat.

The interior you have now is I think a 'TMI style kit', for want of a better word, done in a similar colour to original.

This from nov 1955...

I found m018 here on this site thankyou! Would it be safe to say that with the glass and lights it was bound for USA?

Does anyone know anything about the distribution centre? I did a google search and came up empty.

With that spec and the fact that it was delivered to the distribution centre the car was ordered by a member of the US Military. Is the car in the US now?

Edit: I see you're "down-under"...so the revised question is did it ever get to the US? Like to start a resto topic...everyone loves a '55 Smile
