I am about ready to fire up the 56 ghia motor with a vintage Denzel hop-up kit installed. This motor is original and was last running about 2 years ago. When it was last run, it ran out of gas. Since then it has been turned over regularly but not fired. The gas tank was removed and cleaned. New fuel filters and 6v battery were installed. I did not do any work on the motor while the car was idle.
My questions are as follows:
1. What precautions should I make before trying to fire the engine? Change the oil? The engine oil was fresh when the car was idled 2 years ago.
2. The car was run out of gas when last fired. Should I do something with the carbs before I turn on the fuel pump? Or can I assume they are OK since the car was run out of gas?
3. What type of fuel should I pour into the tank? Any recommended additives?
4. I have heard of people pouring some oil into the cylinders before starting the engine. Is this recommended? If so, what should I pour in and how much? Spray WD40 into the cylinders?
Any other recommendations are highly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve |

And a big no on the wd40 in the cylinders...
Your engine has two fluids, gas and oil. Neither one of them contain wd40.
A light oiling would be o.k if you are worried about damage to the rings during initial start up...
Post pics and/or video of your vintage speed beauty when you get'er running please!
An early ghia with a denzel! AWSOME!!!! |

Marvel Mystery Oil is recommended for a pre-start up procedure. Take out the spark plugs and add about 2 tablespoons to each cylinder.
Leave to sit for 24-48 hours and then turn the engine over by hand. If it all turns nicely fire it up and run it to burn off the oil. Clouds of white smoke but no problems. |
Awsome, I am gonna find some of this stuff!

Put some gas in it and run it. Dump the clutch and see if you can get it to spin the tires. Well just try the gas, worry about spinning the tires after it stops. It is a rare motor, but so were Judson's, pepcos, Mag(blowers), okrassa, and 2pc Pre A motors, thought of at one times. With the internet more and more of these pop up.
Be proud of that thing and drive the wheels off it, to many sit in the dark and collect dust. _________________ 5 lbs into 3 lbs bag every day

Well, did you fire it up??? pulled the plugs, few squirts of marvel mystery oil, put fresh oil in it, I would even put some 30wt brad penn break in oil. turn it over a few times without the plugs, fresh gas. check all the fuel lines for cracks and fire it up.
otherwise I be over and do it for you.....but on that test drive I may be gone for awhile......... _________________ Life is Good! Have a Nice Day!-don't worry about the jerks out there on the forum, in the end... they fall, and fall hard!

No, I didn't start it yet. As you can see on the pics, I am still putting the brakes back together (Porsche 356 b drums all around). I also decided to paint the gas tank beofre I reinstall it so I am probably a few weeks away from trying. But I'll keep you guys posted. What other pics do you want me to take??
