Dropped the engine today.
Definitely had some leaks
This is the only major rust I've found. I'll replace this with metal.
I believe I have an early bay exhaust retrofit, but alot of it wasn't connected.
The engine came out easy
That's about it...next is the tranny, then disassemble the rest for paint...etc _________________ My Resto Thread

All kinds of leaks with this engine.
I also wanted to note how helpful Richard Atwell's engine write up was; made it a piece of cake. _________________ My Resto Thread

I know I should be posting about the bus, but dude that is a really nice tool box. Trade? I got a cardboard box with a pirate on the side of it with one leg up in the air. It's pretty nice. _________________ "Today was good.

Yeah... an' already painted to match the bus!
Back OnTopic, wonder if all that funk in the bellhousing is from a leaking rear mainseal, or if some of it has seeped out around the tranny's input shaft. The engine compartment itself actually looks fairly clean considering the engine seal is gone!
Looks like a nice project. Best wishes.

PopeSutek:
I'll have to think about that one.
WestyPop:
I believe what you see there is due to the seal at the input shaft. It didn't look like motor oil there. Almost every spot that could be leaking is leaking. The PO said he had it rebuilt a few thousand miles ago, but I'm not real comfortable with whoever done the work. It ran when I got it, but I decided to open it up and see what I have. The heat exchangers weren't connected, the engine seal was missing, the egr filter was wide open due to the exhaust mod...etc...etc. I know there had to be some cooling issues. I'm not in a hurry to be done this is an extra vehicle, and it's for my wife. By the time I'm done I want it to be like a new bus. _________________ My Resto Thread

Easiest way to tell if the oil is from the engine or the trans is by smell. The trans oil has an incredibly nasty "bouquet". _________________ 73 Riviera Camper - "Julius"

I believe you can recognize this from the one pic, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the thermostat is missing bracket and all. At least the flaps are there and complete. Another reason I want to completely disassemble everything.
The garage is a larger two car garage that belongs to my mother-in-law. Not a bad place to work with my forced-air heater. _________________ My Resto Thread

I noticed that it looks like you are missing one of the exhaust studs on the head for the # 2 cylinder. That is something your surely need fixed. I am dealing the exact same stud missing and it's no picnic. |

Looks like the trans needs some attention also. Seals all around. _________________ Brett

Been here - done this before...lol
Anyway - some things to note...
I notice that the alt bracket is no where near right --- you have the early/late heat exchangers - the alt bracket should connect to it...
Second...
Looks like you have a missing / broken exhaust stud on one of the exhangers (pass side?). _________________ Ryan

looks like a good solid project.
someone has installed 72-74 heater boxes on a 75-78 engine. the hot air pipes (btw HE and heater valve) are wrong, rear hot air pipe on the right is deformed, probably as an attempt to make it fit, alternator bracket is wrong. _________________ SL |

Had a little bit of time today after dinner to start dismantling the engine.
Good eye on the stud. I'm going to go over the entire bus with a fine tooth comb. What I'll probably need help with is what was done with the exhaust retrofit. I can take it back to original, but I need to do some more research on the retrofit.

bug away.
keep the exhaust, it looks new, plus the 72-74 swap is a good way to go. you just need the rest of the bits for the swap. _________________ SL |

I'll probably stick with the stock color. That would be agate brown on bottom, and atlas white on top. I wish I could keep the champagne edition stickers with a new paint job, but it will probably be too much of a hassle. _________________ My Resto Thread

I had a little time to work on the bus today. I now have it ready to put on the engine stand.
You think this engine has been run hot?
#3&4 head
Notice the #3 exhaust valve spring. I wonder what caused that?

Looks like you were doing well on the oil changes. It looks clean inside the head. That retainer is pretty strong and sometimes you have to tap them to free them up the keepers. _________________ Brett
