Couple more from today, ground the welds down and primed. Still need to use some filler but too cold out for that today.

Wow, working out in the snow. That's dedication. We got about 17" here. I worked on my 67 a little too, but I have a garage. I can't see myself welding out in your carport. You using mig, or flux core? _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

What about the rest of the weld? |
I didn't weld the bottom because I will be removing the heater channel. The PO only patched up these channels with bottom plates, he never actually changed them. Yea Sean I froze my arse off yesterday out there. The carport only blocks so much snow, plus the wind didn't help.I got done just in time before the snow really came down. We got about 10 inches. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

I was talking about the top, surely you aren't going to just leave it as a bunch of tacks? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

I am using a MIG, not flux core but with the Argon/CO2 mix. I left if like that at the top b/c that's all I thought was needed to avoid warpage? So you guys are saying to fill in the gaps? thanks _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

The PO had patched the rear shelf. It was mostly in place by self tapper screws..lots of them and he used what looked like liquid nails glue as seam sealer . So I took the piece out and will be cutting more of it out including the crossmembers.
I have this solid one from a Ghia that I will be cutting and making fit. Both shelfs are 37" wide so they pretty much look the same.

Yeah, I think it's just space your welds out and go back and forth to keep the heat out, but you definitely want to fill in the gaps. I'm pretty sure, I mean, I'm no pro, but that's how I've seen other people do it (not just on the internet, in person too) and done it myself (albeit not on any exterior metal quite yet). _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Rob, I too got a package tray donor. Next time I'll just pony up the damn $200 and buy one. It's more trouble then it's worth to drill all the spot welds and remove the unwanted or needed material. Time I'd rather spend doing something else to the car. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Yea but the aftermarket package trays are thinner metal and prolly don't fit as well as og..plus this tray has like perfect crossmembers..New ones are like $60 per side and again prolly don't fit as well as og. There's nothing like working with og metal pieces for quality and fit. If I could I'd try to use all og metal if I could find them and not pay too much for them, then I would. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

I've got that thread bookmarked too - I loved the way you took photos of all the underside and the strengthener making - really useful for my project cab!!! _________________ '67/'68 Cal Look Beetle, 2007cc, 48IDFs, 14.4 @ 93mph, Oct 2017.

Got the passenger windows in to see how they fit...still need some tweaking, but they'll be coming out again before paint any way.

Put in a new steering coupler. Seems to be better quality than the red urethane ones. Too cold to out there to do anything else I needed to put it on to make this thing easier to steer & push around. Body will be coming off eventually.
Anyone know if the vert hood pull cables are longer than the std bugs? This one I got from the '65 std bug seems shorter than the one that came with the vert.

Picked up a near perfect OG rear apron clip and decklid from this '64 last night. I am going for the older look, and I may even graft in the vert vents into this decklid once I get the vents and measurements.
He also had these for cheap in case I need them when I do the channels.
