Another hot topic here in the Thing forum is exhausts. Thing owners have some pretty specific concerns when it comes to exhausts, whether it's stock or performance. Hopefully you'll be able to find helpful information in these previously discussed topics. Note that, like other popular topics, you will find a LOT of overlap in the information discussed, but each topic may also offer unique info that you will find useful.

Here are a few random exhaust images that you may find interesting...
"Trekker with TypeIII thunderbird muffler"...
A freshly installed "Pea Shooter" muffler with J-pipes...
A Type 4 with a merged 4-into-1 system...
NOS parts and pieces from a 1973 exhaust...

Another merged header system (appears to be ceramic coated) from Switzerland. Note that this is not a "Sidewinder" exhaust...

After searching through this forum it is safe to say that exhausts have to be one of the most frequently posted topics - ever. Feel free to search on your own, but I went back several years and found that most of the information remains the same, and has been covered multiple times. I tried to compile the most useful and relevant topics above.
I hope you'll find this helpful. I'll update this thread as more info becomes available.

Well, I'd say this is a bit of an exaggeration. I just went through each thread above and found that the majority of the links to vendor web sites work just fine. Obviously, you can't expect any link to eBay or the Samba classifieds to remain current for long.
Yes, a few of these topics pre-date 2007, but the information in these old threads is still relevant, even if a few links and photos aren't showing up. Many of the "dead" links still lead you to a vendor website where you can search for the part you're looking for.
I also found that quite a few of the missing photos are reposts, or are in quotes. As far as I can tell, there is at least one photo of every kind of Thing-specific exhaust, as well as a broad assortment of other exhaust photos currently featured in at least one of the above threads.

I have a OE German exhaust on my 73 Thingster, and it has the pea-shooter sized exhaust pipes and no coupling between the left and right sides. It really could do with more have power, and I do have a free-flow header in my parts stash.
I have been off-roading with the SoCal Bajas, and really apreciate the ground clearance and the Thing engine guards.
How much will I lose in clearance, if I replace the OE exhausts?
I am in Vegas right now and will measure my exhaust when I get back on Tuesday, but feel that the extra 5% oomph may not be worth it.

If it is a Beetle header, I would live with the lower power. I used to have a header on my Thing. It left about 8 inches of ground clearance and stuck out 2in behind the bumper. Basically a horrible departure angle. Ended up backing into a small berm and smashing the exhaust towards the engine tin.
The Tri-Mil Thing exhaust has very good clearance, equal to the stock '74 exhaust. It almost tucks above the lowest point on the rear part of the body, and presents a much smaller profile widthwise. No performance difference compared to my header. If you want to visualize it, the can is 4in diameter and roughly 12in wide. Top of the can is just underneath the bumper, and the rearmost part is about in line with the frontmost part of the bumper. I think the can could do to be moved up some, but I no longer fear running it into the ground. |

I have a Kymco 1 5/8 header with a hideaway muffler....fits good. I had to take off the bumper. After...I went to put the bumper on.....I had to do some work...
First- After the system is on..Heat up the exhaust at the collector end of the muffler and push down...slightly.
Then- Bend the bottom of the bumper up/ where it goes back under the car.
This is what I did! The guys at Kymco said it should work without any modifications..

Answering a bit late, but I had almost that exact same system on my car for years. The mufflers get in the way of adjusting the valves, but I did learn how to do it with them in the way. I picked up a set of angled screwdrivers, but found that a dime was enough to hold the screw in place.
The system isn't an extractor system - it will not give you the additional power that the S&S system will. I went from an S&S header to that divided Thing shop header and lost a few HP.

I run one on my 74 with stock 1600 for the last 5 years and it is fairly quiet and gives great ground clearance as nothing hangs under the motor. |

thanks! Ive been wavering back and forth between shelling out @200 for the cip1 74 exhaust, which i know will rust out in time, and dropping 400 for the thing shop exhaust, which is stainless steel.
Does the thign shop exhaust still have that kind of "brrrrrr...sound" to it? Not quite a beetle fweem , but still ACVW? |

I installed the polished Thing Shop split exhaust system on my '74 a couple weeks ago. It fit well and looks great. It sounds good, quiet, but with a liitle purr and rumble. I can feel more power and the motor revs easier. I had the S & S header with twin pipes before, which makes little since. One collector and then bolting on two mufflers and routing forward and the back again? Why ? Next, I had removed the twin S & S mufflers and rewelded a bug glass pack to fit the header and that was a big improvement in flow and weight savings. The polished Split Thing Shop system is even better, It sounds, looks and performs great !
