| anyone have any ideas for a quieter exhaust? I have the Thing Shop exhaust and it is really loud, can't hear my wife talking when we drive (yeah I know......). I would like to try to keep the stock look if possible. |

Your hearing must be better than mine... I have TTS Stainless split system and I Love it...
I hear my straight gears more than the exhaust.
Doesn't TTS have stock systems available as well? You'll lose flow, but it'll quiet it down for ya.
OR, go to an exhaust shop and have them swap the Mufflers only out for a quieter style.. Just spit balling here.........

The system I have looks mostly like The Thing Shop's version. Perhaps it is the S&S system I read about that is no longer available. I don't know.
Thing Shop
It seems to be fine except it is a real pain to get to the valves.
The only other ones I can find are:
SoCal which states is a Tri Mil
On eBay that states is original Tri Mil design
CIP version that admits is Empi
So, do these help with valve adjustments?
I have heard so much about today's Empi, I don't want that version. Is the one on eBay a Tri Mil system or just admitting the design is similar and may be different? This could be an important question as I might risk the price difference if I might get a quieter system.
Are there any other options? Is going to a custom exhaust shop worth the effort?
And excuse my ignorance, but would this baffler actually work? What do you do -- stick them in the end of the pipe? Would they protrude?
My engine is stock and I have no plans to beef it up anytime soon.

The E-bay item IS a Tri Mil exhaust. Don't know about the baffle, but I am intrigued.

Good to know. Phrases like "original design" on eBay make me extra cautious when I don't know the seller.

With the general complaint about the Tri Mil being it is a bit noisy, I may give it a try if I find the Tri Mil a bit noisy as well. I can't figure out if one sticks it in the very end of the exhaust or somewhere else before the exhaust is fitted back onto the Thing.

| I contacted vintage speed and they do not have a thing specific kit. Does anyone know if the slammed bus or kit car kits would work? |

Just an FYI, Vintage Speed who makes these exhausts told me they are working with TTS to produce a Thing specific exhaust similar to the unit they made for the Type 4 motor in the Thing posted recently by iltis74. This one will be for a type 1.

A through-the-bumper exhaust for a Thing and a Type IV. Uh oh, time to rethink my strategy. 
Any idea what engine sizes the Type IV exhaust accommodates? Or the Type I will accommodate?
I think TTS said 1700cc max with their current offering ... or was that Tri-Mil ... I forget ... anyway, that's a concern.

I have developed an exhaust leak.
I have an original VW pea shooter on my Thing and it sticks out under the bumper quite a bit. I don't think that's where the leak is, but my thinking is if I'm going to take it all off to re-seat it all and tighten it up, it'd be nice to have a muffler that actually exits the bumper.
I'm running heater boxes on my Thing...
Has anyone run the OEM Style 74 muffler that German Motor Works sells?
Does anyone know if the one Mid-America is selling is the same manufacturer? It appears to be ~$150 cheaper
Is the performance of the TTS divided header and stainless worth the extra $$$? Does it make setting the valves more difficult?
I'd like a slightly quieter exhaust so I can hear the engine better - and maybe a radio.

One of my main requirements was a exhaust that incorporated a functional heat riser connection not the afterthoughts that are on most exhausts these days. The single carb runs great when the manifold is properly heated. These riser connections use a high and low pressure to achieve this.
Secondly, I plan to run one of ThedubShops FI kits at a later stage so I had a O2 bung installed where I can keep it on all the time and it will not stick out like a soar thumb. Until I FI the car I still will have the O2 sensor installed since I have a AFR guage in the car, never hurts to know what I'm running.
The quality of this work is excellent and I mean EXCELLENT, I can't believe how well it turned out. It will exit the bumper on both sides like stock and ground clearance will be the same.
O2 bung up close the sensor will be barely noticeable from behind the car

I did want to stress I did ask MT to place my O2 sensor in a certain spot normally there is one on each side of the muffler itself. Since I'm going FI at a later date I asked for the bung on the piping pointing towards the front of the car so the O2 will be a little more hidden.
I can't stop starring at my new exhaust when I go in my garage can't wait to finish my rebuild so I can fire it up. |

Also, interested in the Vintage Speed... what other options are people running. Will be attached to a 1776cc engine. I don't want it to be loud. I like my music & still want to chat when I drive.
