Okay, bought a 65 with a 12 volt battery in it, PO said it was converted to 12 but it was an incomplete project and the guy is a kid so who knows. It has a stock 40 hp in it and I mean it looks stock so im trying to figure out what is true without spending too much time in the freezing garage. It has a 009 on it but everything else looks stock and I cant find anything that indicates its a 12v conversion.

Theres a 12v battery in it thats reading 8.1 volts and the wiring has been hacked. All of my past dubs have been 6volt so please give me a free pass on this question.

If I go out and pull the starter should there be 12 volt stamped on it or no? I think I could handle the cold for the time it takes to do that.

That is a 6V generator on the engine. Sounds like the only conversion done was to install the 12V battery.

The coil should say if it's 6 volt, and the choke element cover plate will say 6V or 12V. The very last thing that should be added to the conversion is the battery. Sounds like it was being done in reverse. I'd ask Santa for a nice new Interstate 19L 6V battery and a poratble heater for the garage. At least get a heater, you're gonna need it for the work you got ahead of you.

Good god! Im no testing guru but I know how to use a meter and that just looked weird, never seen that before. I just want to see if this engine runs before I swap the pan out and sell the engine. I will put my 6 volt battery in it and see if anything turns on.

I do have a heater I just need to get some kerosene today.

Count the number of cells in the battery. 6V = 3, 8V = 4, and 12V = 6.
Check what the coil says. Check what it says on the choke element.
Check what the sealed beams say on the back.
