Originally changed to rods for Zwitter in October 1952.
For Split there was available aftermarket accessory rods to update straps.

Thats cool! one 50 has/had ( I had to replace them with KN) its original metal straps ( leather over) but our other 50 has these rods and I always assumed they were just home made! But I know they have been on there for at least 40+yrs while the car was stored. _________________ Anna.

what was wrong with the straps that they needed to be "updated" ? the straps seem to be about the simplest least likely to malfunction door check to me, the rods seem to be overly complicated in comparison, I have seen people selling the rod retrofit kits as NOS in VW wrappers, never knew what the deal was before, Thanks! _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction. i have 2 reliable sources to answer such questions...the first is a 2 book set called the Car of the Century. It covers almost all changes to the type one car from 1930 by serial number. That was compiled and offered through JT Garwood. i got my set in 1993. Are they still available?
i still have my 1952 Zwitter and play with it some. Bought it from my brother in 1993. He bought it in 1972. It is an original Hoffman car shipped to the USA in 1952. i am really into busses now and have 9 form 1960 to 1972. We are doing a 1962 sub hatch with major patina for my 16 yr old son right now. Still have some bugs though...the 52, a 54 complete pan, 62 rag, 63 sedan and a 66 Denmark car. Only the fifty two runs and drives.
My second source is an original VW Type one Spare Parts list in book form. It states on page8-35 that a check rod 111 837 249 left and 250 right were used up to ch no. 1-397022 (9/52)...L & R were the same. and a different one 111 837 251 from ch no. 397023 (10/52) to 929745 (8/55) and yet another 111 837 257 from ch no. 929746.
According to JT Garwood 1951 bodies beginning with ch. no. 1-0220472, standard and deluxe recieved a new black spring steel door check strap replacing the leather type used in 1950...that was the same body that recieved the first Wolfsburg crest and on and on the changes for 51 were listed.
Hope that answers your question.

Old post, I know. I have two questions on these.
First, what color is the metal portion? Black like the picture below or bare steel or something else?
For someone starting with brand new versions of the strap type door check, What shape do they need to be bent to be installed and function?
I'm starting with totally flat, straight ones.
Pictures of original ones would be great.
Thanks all. |

They are semi gloss black.
I think you can install them just as flat as they are.
The little bend comes on its own when in use.
Donīt miss to place the little rubber bumper that belongs to the T-shaped end. _________________ Master of my domain! |

In 1947 they were just bare metal and sprayed the same paint and colour as the car. No doubt at the same time as the car was being sprayed. Very handy for paint matching, as these items spend most of their time out of the light, with minimal fading. |

By the way.
I just looked up what I have and I noticed I have two styles of rubber bumpers. One pair flat and the other pair with two humps.
Is that a year depending thing or is one sort not even VW? _________________ Master of my domain! |

It looks to me that they must have some sort of bend to even get them installed.
I'd prefer to not have my fresh paint used to create the shape |

I never had to install those yet.
It will take a while till mine will have to struggle with fresh paint.
So give them a bend if thatīs better. _________________ Master of my domain! |

A gentle bend before fitting is required, as I've been finding out! |
