Haven’t driven the bus in a while so I Went to drive bus to work today and it would not start.
I noticed fuel soaked at the gasket seams.

Later I decided to remove the carb just to check it out.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then started to take the carb apart.

I don’t have a rebuild kit on hand so I just started to clean it up.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I installed my spare carb just to make sure it works.

Still would not start.

Checked the plugs and they were dry as heck. So I thought fuel was not getting to the cylinders.
Removed the fuel line from the carb and put my electric fuel pump in line and wire it to the coil and voila!:

The bus starts and runs.

Looks like I need a fuel pump again. Rolling Eyes

Yep Smile

When I break down that’s what I want people to say while I’m at the side of the road. ... “wow, look at that clean carb!!!”

Ok. I think I have figured out my problem.

I found the original carb has a problem where the choke plate shaft was binding. Probably that caused it to not start that day.

My backup carb had a stuck needle valve, but when I put the electric pump in, the needle valve became free again.

So I used the top half of the backup carb, the needle valve from the original carb, and put the mechanical fuel pump back in service.

Bus starts and runs great again. I will see how long this lasts.

You need to install a metal line for the vacuum hose. Needs to hump upward or loop so the metal line gets higher than the connection at the carb. Otherwise gas gets into the vacuum canister destroying the rubber diaphragm in the vacuum canister.

Yep, upgrading that loop or upward hump vacuum line is a great and fairly inexpensive preventative measure for your motor.

I’ve wondered all these years how you adjust a screw to the “ left” and “right”

Very unGerman

Turning it 1/3.5 of a turn to the left was always challenging, too.

Had a brake fluid leak and decided to fix before a road trip.

Brake line nuts stripped trying to remove them so I had to replace one.
The bubble flare is different on the aftermarket hose.
Got some bending tools to try.

The Empi reservoir I was given at Street and Sand toys was the wrong one. Not worth returning for $20. It needs to have a smaller outlet nipple.

The replacement master I picked up from Street and Sand Toys in ft Lauderdale Florida. It is a China reproduction, but very close in configuration.
Missing a bolt under the reservoir for I don’t know what.

The rear hard line would not budge with the proper 11mm flare nut wrench, with PB Blaster, heat, impact.
I gave up and decided that the hard line would get damaged and plan to replace it. So I used a vice grip on it and it eventually came loose.
Looks like a major job and I didn’t order a rear hard brake line.
So I used the vice grip to put the rear line back on the new reservoir.
I put a new short line for the front brakes from the master to the T fitting.
I cleaned up the original 67 Ate reservoir and put it on the new master with new grommets

Spend time yesterday bleeding the brakes and finishing up this job. COVID-19 Coronavirus isolating in the garage.

Tried to use a fancy vacuum bleeder that required 150psi compressed air but my compressor could not keep up with the air requirements to pull enough vacuum.

It did come with a very nice bottle adapter to keep the master cylinder reservoir full.
I ended up asking the wife to pump the brakes for me and do it the old fashion way.

My spindles have been modified for bay window disc brakes, but drum brakes still fit if you trim the bleed nipple off, which I did.
So to bleed the brakes, the whole brake assembly has to come off the spindle and rotated enough to me to access the bleed screw and put the drum back on the test the brakes. Good thing I don’t do this often.

High beams were flickering on and off as you so much as touch the turn signal.
This is a reproduction switch from Wolfsburg West I got 11 years ago.

A weld broke that held the turn signal stalk to a metal stub.
I ended up stuffing a piece of plastic under the metal to stop the shaft from wiggling on the metal stub.

Rear driver side Brakes shoes locked up on a short trip nearby.
I did not have my tools to release the shoes so I had to drive home and stop now and then to let them cool down.

When I press the brakes HARD the left rear shoes hold and stay applied then slowly release over 30 mins.
At home I cracked opened the brake bleeder while the shoes were locked up and the shoes released.

So this test tells me the problem is the wheel cylinder and not the brake lines.

Ordered 2 new TRW wheel cylinders from Amazon.

My emergency brake has always been kind of weak.
It seems the rear brake push bar is worn and not pushing the shoes enough.
Might have to replace or weld them up.

I looked at this pic and the brake show spreader bar, brake push bar, brake show lever bar, etc, is labeled as part #6.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I see how much my push bar was worn out because the emergency brake arm, at rest, is too close to to the axle shaft.

So since I am on COVID-19 lockdown, I decided to give Harbor Freight welder a workout instead of buying parts.

I really need the welding practice anyway

I don't really have a reference of how deep the notch in the spreader bar should be, but I am seeing it almost touches Lincoln's nose on a new penny.

I did a test and the e-brake was super tight, even with the adjusters all the way loose, so I made the notch slightly deeper (maybe too far), but the brake is WAAAAY better than it ever was since I purchased the bus in 2008.

The emergency brake even does a good job slowing down the bus while driving, where before it was only good for barely holding the bus on a hill.
