before putting the welder back I decided to weld up the hole in my exhaust.

I did more grinding than I should because I added so much metal with the welder.

The I used a wire brush on a drill and cleaned up the surface for paint.

Loaded up the muffler with a thick coat of BBQ paint like I used in 2012. That lasted several years.

New gaskets all around except on tailpipe.

Put primary carb back on. Cleaned up intake manifold.

Need to replace intake manifold end port gaskets.

Before fixing the brakes, Empi carb started acting like it would not go when I hit the gas pedal.
Turns out the accelerator pump was not shooting fuel into the carb throat.

Decided to play around with it.
Used wire to clear the holes. Blew air and no flow.
I saw there is a small ball like a check or one way valve in the passage.

Removed the plug, freed up the ball, and tried the Bondic magic bonding agent from Instagram, but once I pumped fuel once it started to leak.
I just popped the bondic plug back out.
I then Soldered the hole I put in the plug (I used a screw to pull it out), reinstalled it, then put JB weld over that.

It goes back in the parts box as a backup carb.

Last time I used this paint it lasted several years.

Update on exhaust paint.

The spray on high temp black flaked off quickly, and the gray finish that it came with wiped off on everything.

So I hit the visible areas with a scrubbing pad and quickly painted it with this (without taking the muffler or bumper off):

using something like this:

After many miles, I am very pleased that it is not flaking off, and still looks good. I could have removed the muffler and done a better job, maybe later.

After my brake job I kept checking brake shoe drag on the rear wheels.
I would coast to a stop and feel the brakes pulling the bus to a stop.
Then when I get home the wheels would be hot to the touch.
Read online and checked my Bentley manual and I forgot to set the brake pedal free play or master cylinder pushrod free play.

I checked by pumping the brakes in the garage super hard and the rear wheels locked up. Then I undid the bolts on the master and the brakes released.
(I Didn’t check, but I would suspect and easier test was to turn on the key and see if the brake lights stayed on without me applying pedal, since the line pressure was stuck high)

Used a feeler to measure push rod free play Instead of pedal free play.
Set to 1mm. Bentley says you can even tap the pedal stop with a hammer if it needs adjusting, I did not.

My Wagenswest bushing started to some play so I ordered a new set.
Turns out the first one I had was machined to keep the needle bearing race on the torsion arms.
I decided to cut them off this time, and I also changed shocks.

The air shocks were allowing the bus to bottom out more often and I never used the air bags anyway.

I always like it when I get a notification from you. Good detective skills and excellent documentation.

I carry much the same gear that you do. One tip I got from a mechanic buddy is to dial in your spare distributor on the motor in the bus. Then remove it along WITH the bracket. That way it is pretty much plug & play if you ever need to swap it out. I always carry a small electric fuel pump and regulator with a pump block-off plate in addition to a spare mechanical pump just in case. I haven’t had to use it. But I helped a guy broken down after a show on the trip home.

I just seen your whole thread. I love that bus. Seeing this just brought back some great childhood memories for me! So damn cool seeing this post for the first time today.

If your bus is the same bus that used to run around Sarasota/ Bradenton in the late 90's. That bus right there started my love and obsession with the split windows. Hooked permanently!

Real quick tho. My old man was a used car dealer in Bradenton. We traded an early early Jag for a 85 vanagon automatic brown westy then later on we got a 68 bay and a couple other fat chicks. That really got me in the direction of the busses I'm 12 or 13 years old at the time.

We used to see your bus all around town, when we were in our bus haha. Later I would go home and draw your bus on paper and color it. Front back side any angle I thought of I drew it , I would do this for months and months then show my Dad the picture I just drew - begging/ hoping we could go buy it hahah. Didnt happen lol.

Really, thanks for this post . This just made my day

I am not sure if this was the bus in Bradenton, but I could be wrong.
I think the builder owned a Repair shop in West Palm Beach and this was built and painted this color around 1994-95 time frame

I used the mighty vac to extract the oil for the first time in the cleanest oil change I have ever done on this bus. 👍

You need to install the rubber grommets on the brake lines as they pass thru various holes in the body/frame to keep metal to metal rubbing from happening.

Plus skip using the mighty vac for oil changes in the future. Unless you are running a full flow oil filter. You want to drain all the oil out the bottom to get all metal shards out of the engine. when without oil filtration.

Good tip.
I never paid that much attention to that.
I do have a whole lot of grommets so that will be a good project .

Yeah, I know better.
I cheated this time but I always like to see what the oil looks like, and what’s in the oil screen. Very Happy

Drove to Daytona “No Dough VW Weekend 2021” and to Bulli Brigade 2021.
So nice to see VW peeps again after a long hiatus.
Almost missed the show because I’m not on Facebook.

(Secretly hope Facebook gets cancelled and we all get back on thesamba.
When I want to see car stuff, I really don’t care that your little junior “graduated” from first grade to second grade, nobody fails first grade.)

Bus went back and forth with no issues. Drove mostly 70mph. Got 20.5 MPG along the way doing the fill up to fill up method.
Very Happy
