|
|
When I first start my 87 Westy, there is a rattle that comes from the engine area. Once the engine is warmed up the rattling goes away. I also noticed if the RPM is low the engine will rattle and sometimes shake.
I'v checked and could not find anything, I also took it into a shop and they could not find anything. Did this happen to anyone else?

Is your exhaust held on by the correct braces or is your muffler held tight by big hose clamps like many...or nothing?
Either way I'll bet its the muffler banging on the rest of the exhaust, go back an d give it a shake. Todd. |

A rattle can be one of many sounds. What kind of rattle are you talking about? Metallic? Knocking? Ping-ping? Ring-ring? Bam-bam? Metal-drum-and-nuts? |

If it goes away when the motor warms up then it might be a baffle inside the muffler that was worked it's way (rusted) loose. When the metal inside the muffler expands, as the motor warms up, it will tighten things up in the muffler and stop the baffle from rattling. That's what is was in my case. I put on a new muffler and my rattle has dissaeared. _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

I noticed the knocking/banging sound that lasted for a few seconds during the time I had a leak on the exhaust pipe from the 1 & 3 cyl. When I replaced the exhaust pipe the knocking and banging is still there for a few seconds when I first start up the Westy and after it has cooled down. |

If it makes a tack tack tack then silence it's merely a tappet/lifter thats pumping up with oil... quite common.
I changed to a 20/50 grade mineral oil that cured it |

Ma'ili Pt Westy, Your close to a group of very fine and honest mechanics....Freds Garage in Redwood City.
They have been twisten bolts on Madam Helga for umteen years and I trust them...their opinions and their prices.
No....I dont work for them, Im just a very satisfied customer who had an oil change done there today.
They specialize in strange sounds and quirky idiosyncratic moans and groans that are inherent to our Westy"s. |
