I notice the air intake vents on some of these have subtle differences.

both are south african, i think, and obviously not factory

I doubt if either of those is South African. What's with the bus trailer? Do you know anything about its purpose?

Budbil is a transport company from Sweden I believe (could be Norway too).
If you search Budbil in google images you get some other results including this one:
http://www.nyscreen.se/budbil.gif

The Swedes seem to like this type of Ute.
See Dalbo, a Volvo based coach maker:
http://www.dalbofordonsteknik.se/Galleri.html
Great looking by the way.

The other one is likely french. Their sponsor is a western France specialty paté. Very likely a Breton guy. That's not South African for sure!

There have been several syncros in the Paris Dakar, it is very hard to get any information or pictures of them. I have seen a couple. But never got to find any info on them.

If you like this type of rallye from the earlier years, and European cars, I highly encourage you to watch this film. Done by the French Marreau brothers and their Renault. They did it in Citroen or Peugeot as well I think.

It's in French, sadly for you. (lots of F word, etc.)

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xxp35_paris-dakar-82-les-freres-marreau_auto

They won that year in 1982 with a Renault 20 Turbo and 4x4.

By the way: VW won in 1980!!!! (with an Iltis, a private runner).
And in 2009 with the Touareg (VW factory team).

Same guys in 1980 with a Renault 4, custom 4x4 too.

Link

Since this thread has moved off special models to include coachbuilts and customs, how about this one in South Africa:

Indeed. The late SA vans moved the flow-thru vents from the rear of the window just forward of the D pillar to actually within the D pillar itself. They exhaust out the slats at the rear of the "scoop".

Well, "Budbil" is Swedish for "courier transport", and that's definitely a Svensk/Norge phone number on the side. So I'm guessing it's a scandanavian courier service...

Being alleged a South African model, may I reasonably assume that it might very well be a right hand drive van and that therefore the sliding door --could-- be on the --other side-->

Here's a one off.

It was special-ordered army green by a danish priest living in England. He even had a danish army flag on it. He then moved to Norway where it came up for sale a few years ago. I was too slow to act on it and it went to Austria or Switzerland.

Stats: 1990 syncro 16" Karmann Gipsy. 1.6td w/intercooler. Had 96 000km on clock and one owner when sold in Norway.

yes that was the point of the comment, with the demise of LHD models, SA vans got rid of the vestiges of right hand sliders. Like we humans long ago lost our tails when we were able to walk upright, at least some of us . . .

How about a aero roof on the tractor/cab and a raised roof on the trailer?
