Hi all.

Can you replace a broken valve spring with the engine still in the bug?

Thanks

Yes you can. Were you driving the car when it broke? If so, you may want to remove the engine and pull the head and inspect the piston and all the other springs.

Pull the spark plug of the cylinder with the broken spring. Remove the valve from your compression tester hose and install it to that cylinder. Remove the rocker shaft from the head. Install an air hose to the hose and put at least 50-75 psi into the cylinder (the piston may move to the bottom of the stroke, that's OK). Its to keep the valve from moving down when working to remove and install the spring. Remove the keepers and retainer and broken spring. To install a new spring you will need a couple tools to compress the new spring and install the keepers.

This too will bolt in place of the rocker shaft and will compress the valve spring. and then any small magnet to install the keepers. Check the last poster or look on the internet. Once the new spring is in stall remove the air and hose, install the rockers and adjust the valves, install the valve covers.

That’s great. Thanks for all the info.

Will take the heads off but really need it running for 1 night this week.

Thanks again
