Here's the new project...
I'm starting with a pretty clean '73 Standard. I got a great deal because the owner thought the engine was siezed - it wasn't. I had it running within 20 minutes of getting it home. He adjusted the valves and forgot the distributor was 180* off, so everything was very loose. So loose that a pushrod came out from under the rocker arm and made one hell of a lot of noise. He shut it off and thought the motor was toast.
I drove it around for a couple of weeks getting to know the new car and picking up new parts. I have a built engine from my old bus that I will be using, so I traded the engine for a bunch of new parts.
Since the car has a lowered beam, I picked up a good German one and added some adjusters. I got some ball joint spindles from Tweeds for an add'l 3-1/2" of lift, and some disc brakes. All new ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, etc. for the front. I'll be using the hook/pin limit system.
For the rear, new 27mm torsion bars, dual spring plates, bushings and a new pro-street tranny (4.12), padded tranny straps, a set of 944 cv's/axles and thing stub axles. Tires are from PepBoys - Definity Dakota M/T, 235/75-15 on 4.5" rims. Shocks are still unknown.
The engine is a 2007cc that had Kadron's while in my bus, but they were sold in favor of a single 44 Weber set-up. I still have some work to do before it's ready to fire up. I need a new manifold that has heat all the way to the carb. I have 1.5" Kymco header and muffler made for a Thing. It tucks up much higher than the type 1 stuff, but will need a little "clearancing" of the apron to fit. Also, heat risers aren't used on exhausts larger than stock, so I get to fab that as well. If that isn't enough, I'm going to make it harder on myself by changing the locations of the tubes to get the most heat (more to follow).
Not sure how the interior will end up, but there will be a cage. I would like to use aluminum panels and new seats, but I don't want to give up the glove box, plus the dash vents look like crap without the padding (I want everything to remain functional). I don't even need to be thinking of that right now.
I'll build some skid plates that come up to the bumper and also a full roof rack. _________________ (ignore the X's )

Looks like a great start to a fun project. Those tires look pretty good... Any idea what the OD is? I need to replace the front tires with something that'll let me steer in the mud. _________________ Les

Nice bug. Looks identical to my 73. Let me know if you are interested in getting rid of that roof rack! |

Class 11 would be stock body wouldn't it? No cutting needed for that. _________________ Les

It's more like "good from a far, far from good". It was repainted a few years ago covering who knows what. They bondoed the vents in the hood to cut off the fresh air flow, nice! Now the paint is all cracked and chipping away. They also painted the window rubber and fender beading...and everything else that got in the way. The pan in very nice though. _________________ (ignore the X's ) |

Sweet! Go for it, and welcome to the "11" club! Not sure why they are getting on your case about cutting it up... all mine took was 2 1.5" holes for the tubes from the cage to the front susp... another 2 1.5" holes for the rear shock supports, and 2 3" x 5" cut-outs for the rear shocks, and some holes in the floorpan to bold down the cage... other than that, no damage done!
before...
and after...

sweet....
hurry up with the progress pics. I'd love to put together a class 11 daily driver with the parts that are coming off my car at the end of next season.
I really wanna see it with the lift spindles on...
good luck on the build. _________________ Shameless buildthread plug:

Yup, cut & turn 1/2", hook & rod stops... saving up for Bilsteins for the front. With 1/2" it barely rides on the stops, but I haven't had it out for any serious off-roading yet (need the good shocks), so I think it should sag a little bit after I put some miles on it. |

oh, sorry thought you were building a class 11, didn't realize you were just going for the look.....OK now I get it.....looks nice...But if you were building a class 11, you would destroy that car.....if I put a glass kit on my street car, I dont call it a 5/1600..... I am building a "pre-runner and it will not be able to be re-converted into a regular street car when I'm done, I am also using a car thats been Salvaged, I have 14 Beetles of various years 57 through 76 at my house but they are all clean and I dindn't want a purist to thrash me about it.....

Do what you want with it, it's your car. If I had known more about VW's when I bought mine, I would have bought a much less rusted one to cut up into a Baja, and probably will when I finish this one, as long as it's not a special edition or oval or anything.
