Interesting...No one seems to stock the Flywheel Dowel Pins for the Vanagon. Is there a good substitute out there?
Cheers,
Jeffery

I found a nice variety of dowel pin sizes at Ace hardware. I brought along the one pin I hadn't lost yet, so I could compare and buy the right size. I dont think there's anything special about those pins. I used the hardware store dowel pins when I pulled the engine out for work, six years ago. I've since driven the van 60,000 miles (six years) with no problems. _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

Has anyone found out the size and length of these pins? I am in need of new ones for my Bostig conversion and I cant seem to find out the specs on these. Not to mention no one seems to stock them. |

Bump.
If someone has a flywheel lying round and could give me just the length of the pin sticking out of it along with its diameter, that would be sufficient too.
Thanks!! |

Roll pins aka tensioner pins are at any hardware store: 6mm x 18mm. I bought 6mm x 20mm, no 18mm available. 40 cents each.
Install them sticking out about 1/8 of an inch. Leave them longer if you're not sure, you can tap them in easier than pull them out. Not a critical measurement, just has to hold the clutch plate. _________________ ________________________________________

Jim,
The engine build happened last winter and the info was tossed out when done. My help came from an older Samba post. [They are 6X18mm roll pins, and can be made from 20mm ones
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/120/3326/=tubvy9
Get the 20mm steel ones (91611A405) and shave off 2mm]
OR do just like JudoJeff says and procure what is on the shelf at ACE.
Gotta love easy solutions!
Cheers,

Wonderful! Thanks very much everyone. I measured everything up with a bore gauge tonight and came up with pretty much the same numbers. I was going to order them tomorrow and its nice to see the numbers correspond.
After that, the trans shall be installed!
Thanks for the help everyone! |
