I can't remember what this is called, maybe survivor bias, but it's the same concept as "I shouldn't stop smoking because my father smoked and died at age 99". Meanwhile 99% (99.99%?) of smokers died earlier than necessary.

WE can all wish to be around our fighting weights for our heights, but nature has its way of saying you are going over the hill. A BigMac will stick to your ass faster when you are older. Kids can put away several and still hungry. |
You do burn a little less but for most people their activity level is lower when older and they are eating more. Result: Weight gain
Stop eating crap and do a little bit of exercise and it's easy to stay stable.
It's really hard to overeat when you are full of veggies and quality foods and drink a lot of water.
I don't have a ton of experience as the most I ever lost was around 30 lbs but I know it's a bitch to lose weight.
Most of it is eating less and simply waiting though.
The waiting is the hard part, everyone wants a quick fix.
You didn't gain 50 pounds in a week, why do you think you can lose it in a week... _________________ How to Post Photos

I know a guy who is a vegan and he is about 150 lbs overweight. He eats a very large bowl of salad every meal -enough for 4 people. He cannot even fit in a regular size chair has to sit on a bench.
I think the reason people eat so much is that they cannot taste the goodness of the food so the tendency is to eat more. If we cook quality food, it is very satisfying -IMO.
There are times one can sleep all day and feel so tired. But sometimes a well placed nap is enough to invigorate you and go another round.
Quality food and proper excersise and rest = good living.
Of course people who don't work for a living have a tendency to be fat. |

I started this thread 13 years ago. I weighed 200 Lbs. back then. Today I weight 210 but I am actually 15 pounds lighter than my heaviest weight from a few months ago. The last 2 months I have been slowly getting back on track. The last 2 years have opened my eyes and it is now clear that the majority of people that are dying from COVID are people that are overweight. Now that I have retired, I see way too many seniors my age that have let themselves go and ballooned far too big.
I'm still shooting for that 170 Lb goal. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I’m down from a peak of 250 to 225. I might reach 200 , but I don’t really have a set goal..I’m focusing on cutting out crap like black water of death, portion control, buying smaller , more expensive cuts of meat, and lots of sex for exercise. My sister in law is helping out a lot _________________ .ssS! |

Just found this thread. Weight loss has been a struggle for me too for many many years.
Popular belief is that you should live out your whole life at the weight that you were at age 18. Well that may apply to the female of the species as they do not gain much in height or muscle mass after that with a few exceptions. Us guys on the other hand do not reach our peak until 25 to 30 years old when we have reached our final size and matched our physical energy expenditure. If I were to go by the former guidelines 180 pounds would be the number but if I were to target the time I was in the best physical condition it would be 220 pounds.
It is true that as we get older our activity levels decline but in my experiance my appetite has not. I enjoy food just as much now as ever. Also I have found that since retiring my physical condition has improved considerably through just moving around more and getting a better sleep at night.
The weight loss thing though remains illusive... steady as a rock for the last 20 years... varying a bit from month to month, season to season but about 25 pounds too much. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Retiring helps to remove a lot of bad stress and poor eating choices. Being on no schedule allows you to exercise and eat more wisely. I am happy that I dropped 60# since retiring about 2 years ago. If you're still working, start to avoid those greasy lunches! _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

Right! When I was working I was up at 4:30 and had breakfast, at work at 6:30 to 7:00 hungry by 10:00, hungry again at 3:00 then home by 7:00 to 8:00 and starving.
Now I am still up at 4:30 (just habit) breakfast at 8:30 with the wife, lunch at noon and supper at 5:00 to 6:00 and never feel hungry anymore. Stress had a lot to do with the hungry feeling I think. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. this thing is alive?
I gained a couple more lbs..since we were here last. Lost 2 friends since that time...both VW hobbyists.
I asked my wife to please not skimp on things that I love to eat...but I agreed to moderation. Goal is let go the beer - and any alcohol for that matter. SEe if I can reclaim some usefulness left from this body.
You all stay well.. |

I'm 6'-2" and 230 lbs. A doctor I saw maybe 10 years ago told me that my target weight should be what I weighed when I graduated high school. I told him I was 160 lbs(same height) then and I was as thin as a rail. Then he said "Okay, you can add 10 lbs". I think I was 220 lbs at the time.

Ya, that notion is just plane stupid! No male of the human race is done growing/filling out at 18 years old! Girls? Maybe, but not guys! Doctors with that opinion need to give their head a shake!
My view is that you should weigh no more that you did at your physical peak in life. Depending on your job/activity level that would be somewhere between 25 and 30 for guys.
Unless of course you adapted a sedimentary lifestyle at 18 years old and never developed any more strength or muscle tone... _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. When I was in the military - i cannot max out 168 lbs for 5' -6" height. I was 160 lbs when I got discharged and I look at my pictures - I look like a twig. I was 128 lbs and change from bootcamp.
I am comfortable if i can be 185 lbs or so for my height..but not 200 lbs. |

My dad went in to college under 6', and left at 6'4" - he was skinny enough as it was, trying to stick with this "advice" to keep a high school weight would've killed him. _________________ Xargaret

This morning I was amazed to see that I am under 200#. For the first time since college, which was in the late 70's lol! Looking at the BMI chart, that's about 20 scale. My doctor said the "recommendation" is 186#, but I'm getting old and saggy- and I say most doctors are 50 percent guessing or opining BS, so I'm good. Thatis a 25 percent reduction, by God. The situation I'm in in retirement is "not having enough time to do everything ", as opposed to " now I can sit on my ass all day."
Point is, I was even More active/busy while working, but ate crap and too much of it. For those of you fighting to lose weight, listen to those who have won the battle, their stories of improved energy, stamina, digestion, sleep, sex, backpain relief....enough to get you convinced that it is truly worth the Hard Effort.
So if you're "wanting to" but just can't follow through on effort, put the priority where it belongs.....long term health vs. continued discomforts! I have yet to meet anyone who says their health issues got better after 50! _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |
