Ok folks?
I understand this section probably gets bombarded with the same questions all the time, but I'm going to ask some anyway because you seem to be the experts!
I have a 1600 TP AD code engine, obviously this isn't compatible with old speed
I plan on buying a 1200, what parts should I use off this? any other combinations of other size engines?
I want a reasonably pokey hot 1200 motor Nice and old speed:)
I would love to supercharge it too so would need relatively low compression!?
I have a few spares , but never EVER considered anything like this before as far as engine work
Tell me what would be the best setup, that doesn't break the bank?
Thanks

Also what parts make the difference to HP?
I understand the 69mm crank gives 13**cc?

i personally don't see why a 1600 can't be done as an old speed style motor. people were doing performance mods to them back in the day. they don't look quite like an early motor but people will still get the idea. (also if you start with a 1600 base motor you can go really big and still look period)
some ideas:
a 010, 019, truehaft/scat distributor
a hotdog exhaust with a flared tip or stock exhaust with taper tips.
a center mounted single carb:
holley bugspray
zenith NDIX
weber DCNL, DCN or DCNF
twin carbs:
NDIX, DCNL, DCN, DCNF or solex P11 40's even IDA's in suitable maniflods
a generator not an alternator
a stock lower pulley or a period styled pulley (say a santana)
you could add a bypass filter or a period styled full flow it you so desired.
if you are using a stock fuel pump use a stock rebuildable pump not a later sealed unit.
just keep it simple looking and stay away from lots of chorme/cad plating/billet etc. or you could spend $$$ on vintage dress up bits.
it may not be a 36hp denzel but you can make it look good with a little thought. |

Thanks Henry:) Was offered this, too good to turn down!
Well I think this is going to be the base of my oldspeed project:
Using this after I have restored it:
Alternatively I have a 043 or a 009( ) if they would be any better?
I have 1600 B&P's, I could get heads too.
Whats the best setup with stuff I have? Is the dizzy suitable?
Thanks

hi ales, that looks like a good base, lots of the nice original bits that make a motor look right.
if it is in good condition a few hundred pounds and a few (well prob quite a few) hours to clean and detail everything and you could have a nice simple old speed motor. add say a center mount NDIX some taper tips and a dizzy.
if you want to keep up with 1600's and up it would take a lot more in the cash department though.
to me this motor is a really nice example

the distributor you have is a stock 36hp beetle dist. most people go for mechanical advance rather than a vac advance. i'm sure it could be made to work though. |

Excellent thanks Henry
I have now worked out the difference in the us & uk
UK == USA
25hp 30hp
30hp 36hp
36hp 40hp
I keep changing my mind on the setup so thanks for understanding!
I definately want one of those fram things
That dizzy is therefore for a 36hp US or 30hp UK engine, so not right!
Im thinking at the moment,
Stock 1200 case with dual relief etc
a 69mm crank
I have 1600 B&P's, this combo with 1300 heads would just be a dowgraded 1600!
Then I think if I run 92 B&P's or something like that then 64mm would be 1700 cc, 69mm would be 1835 (I think)
So I am missing the whole 1200 old speed thing
Then I think 1200 case, 1500 B&P's (83mm) (no required machining?) 1385cc Big bore Keeping with the 64mm crank as that is the 1200 engine
So if I had the 1385 what heads would flow the best etc?
Is this still a 1200 ?
Love that bug up top, very very nicely detailed engine too.
Thanks for all your help

Just read that link, VERY inspirational!
I do want to move away from the 64mm crank, but I think I would probably go 69?
Thanks
