Winter projects: I took the axle beam out of Herbie and took it apart. I wanna get the front down a little. Kind of match the rear sag a bit. While its apart I figured I would replace the torsion bar seals. They looked fine but I mangled one five years back when we had it all out to wire brush the axle. I've read people had trouble removing the sway bar bushing clamps but no problem at all! I just cut them right off.... They were just rusted together after all the winter driving in New York that the car did in its previous life. on A- Bomb I was able to unbend the tabs and get them off to reuse, not this time
carnage

While I have the front end apart I decided to tackle something that has been a problem for some time now. The first king pin rebuild that I did lasted 250 miles. The replacement one I bought lasted 250 miles. I got that one from the same place I got the New Bug Ball Joints and Trailing arms for A- Bomb. That was Late night Air-cooled. I don't think it was their fault but the quality of the new German parts. The originals had a fiberglass washer in there where today it is plastic. I think the plastic wears out prematurely casing there to be too much play. Both times it has only been a problem on the drivers side so I have two good passenger side assemblies some how. I combined what was good between two different king pin assemblies and to fix the vertical play I added a link pin shim under the thrust washer.

This might help the next guy : Rags on fenders to proyect the paint , wood across , rachet straps lift beam into place .
No jacks needed ; blue strap pulls beam into place after two green ones lift it high enough.

Yep I was too hung up on the jack idea! . I could of easily used just the straps to pull it up. The beam wasn't too heavy for it to work. I could almost lift it into place from underneath but needed a third hand to bolt it. You could also put the beam in empty and build it there. I did that with my 66. Less complicated that way just needed a floor jack. I went with putting it together in the basement this time around because there is no heat out in the garage. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

How bad was it to get the beam back together? _________________ Ruby red 1967 beetle sedan with a 2021cc

Took advantage of our 70 degree sunny day today to roll the car out of the garage for the first time in months. I ripped out that POS hood seal that I bought thinking it was going to last and was high quality. It started to crack in three months. It was also a PITA to install. The new German one from West Coast Metric didn't take 2 hours to install.
Because of crap like this I only go to West Coast Metric for all rubber and nobody else. I'm keeping receipts too. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Update I just looked at the receipt for the hood seal from 2010 and it turns out that I didn't order the German one somehow. My mistake but the speed o cable seal wiper pivot arm seals vent window seals also went in the same time. I didn't see if there was a German option at WW or not and The engine SEAL, (engine to body) Cooked in months also. No German option. I replaced that Years ago with one from WCM. Its still good but think it will fail in a few more years.Kept receipt. also noticed the other day the bumper mount seals are starting to crack. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Have you had better luck with the German stuff, or do you just hope that it'll be better? I'd like to get a new trunk seal for my Super, but I don't want to spend money unnecessarily on the German stuff if it's not as good as it ought to be... |
German has always been far better in my experience.even used German. I'll take it over China junk. The only time German hasn't worked out is the king pin issue. Something You wouldn't need to worry about on a SB. Go with West Coast Metric for that hood seal. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Instead of talking about what hasn't held up in the past five years here is a list of what has and from where. Ill add to it if I remember anything else.
Rear deck lid seal, Wolfsburg West
Body to pan seal, Wolfsburg West
Door Window Moldings, German, Wolfsburg West
windshield and rear window seals, Wolfsburg West
headlight wiring conduit, Wolfsburg West
OIL BREATHER RUBBER VALVE from West Coast metric. other brand cooked in a month.
Beetle Vent Wing Rubber, German, ( the one that goes in the frame) Wolfsburg West
Engine tar Board, Wolfsburg West
front signal light seals Wolfsburg West ( but I like the WCM ones I put on my 66 better)
and this is why I'm pissed anything has cracked up, the rear signal light housing seals to body from I don't know where. they came with the car and are probably twenty years old not OG but I would guess J Bugs cause the PO really liked them. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

I was able to get the chance to take a test run with the car yesterday. This is how the car sits with a nearly empty tank. I have the beam adjusted almost all the way up and its about two inches lower in the front from before. I think just having new bearings and inner bushings in there helps things work better as in it was getting stuck up before.
Just a couple more odds and ends and it will be ready for the season ahead. Like the passenger side running board needs to be adjusted a bit cause it was interfering with the door shutting. The holes for it on the running board are a little off. Before I drove the car I meant to take it off because I only had two bolts without nuts holding it to the fenders. Every time I took off I was trying to figure out what is that clunking sound? I remembered just before getting back to the driveway. It stayed on for a couple laps around the neighborhood. Did I get lucky! _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=
