|
|
I had my bus in the air today to check the front wheel bearings because I have been hearing some thumping during breaking. I did notice there is some play in the wheel. I take it the bearings are loose. I have a new set of bearings to go in, but should I replace the races at the same time?
Can I get away with just replacing the bearings and not the races? _________________ 1990 Vanagon RS 2.1

Sure if you want to do them again in no time flat.
You must be kidding to suggest a short cut rip off repair on this forum.
Of course you replace the race. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I would verify that the bearings were bad before I replaced them. A few thousandth of axial play is pretty normal. Clean the bearings and look for any signs of pitting, metal transfer, discoloration from heat, or anything out of the norm. Make sure that you get the cones fully clean so you can inspect the inner race as well as the rollers.
Best to always keep the cups and cones matched and replace as a set. |

I purchased the wheel bearing kit from Van-Cafe (grease cap, inner + outer bearing, peening nut)
A brass drift is a MUST for removing the races (I had a hard time finding brass drifts at my FLAPS. I finally found the most reasonably priced set at Sears
Remove Wheels and grease cap (be careful not to bend the grease cap)
Old bearings, grease, and grease seal
Put the rotor on a bench vice and start removing the races with the brass drift. Try to work around the race to drive it out evenly. This took some practice but I finally got the hang of it. Drive the new races in using the same procedure.
Repack your new bearings with fresh bearing grease forcing the grease into all the bearing surfaces
Replace and use the Bentley (40.11) for correct torque procedure. Don't forget to peen your new nuts

Thanks for the for how to pictorial.
I replaced the rear bearings and races on my 93 Corrado and it is pretty much the same routine.
my bus has 175K on it and no records of when they were done last. I figured if its all apart mine as well replace all of it. Was unsure on the races though.
Thanks again ! _________________ 1990 Vanagon RS 2.1

Some people mistake that there is grease for disc rotor bearings and a different grease for drum brake bearings. _________________ Peace, Regis |
