Cerot: That is a had call to save or part, they are getting rare and will go for good money some day, but that said to get it back into good or preteen condition could take thousands of hours and $, so in the end buying a better one would be a wiser move if you had to have a DC, IMO life is too short for some restorations… _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

OK, back to the original topic....
I have no idea whether the 3rd door had a moisture barrier from the factory. The lack of a roll-down window suggests not, but the door has drain holes in the bottom. It couldn’t hurt, right?
Before starting – Dynamat insulation for sound deadening. Caulk installed around perimeter.
3M Butyl caulk strips – basically the same as OEM sealant
Moisture barrier installed – plastic sheeting from ace hardware, cut using the door panel as a template.
Door panel (from Clara) installed.

Looks Good!
I suppose there should not be too much concern about keeping moisture in the rear door with the plastic, I understand about the Dynamat, without sound insulation a DC can be noisy, I think the bare metal rear inside corners and aria around the rear window contributes a lot to the noise inside the cab, I think I will add soundproofing and some roof liner material over it to help with the noisiness...
Do you have the second seal for the bottom of the rear cab door, I have not seen many, mine is in good shape but I rarely see them installed on restorations… _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

Mine didn't have the lower strip when I got it - just the door seal. I was told by another crew cab owner that a section of a split window cargo door seal works but I have not tried that yet.
I bought a repo door seal from Paruzzi several years ago. When I tried to fit it last week the fit was disappointing - sloppy fit and the door wouldn't shut. I put the crusty original back on and it fits great. I may try and clean that up and run with it until someone makes a better aftermarket seal. _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

that looks awesome. I'll follow the next installments with interest. I have a 72 Doka which needs a little TLC especially treatment to the gates and sides of the bed.

The crew cab door did indeed have the plastic weather sheet from the factory. My '78 still had parts of that in place. _________________ John

Rear seat finally done (although I still need to reinstall the seat belts). Sewfine black tweed cloth in OEM-style pattern.

I ordered these as a pre-made set from Sewfine in Colorado. The material is stock black tweed cloth. Although no strictly stock, it looks stock because of the pattern. I get black cloth in all my cars.... hides dirt, warm in winter, (reasonably) cool in summer. Be sure and read my other thread (link below) if you are going to order a set.

Where does that go? In the channel that is part of the below-door rocker? Like the single cab storage compartment door seal?
I've never had a seal there, but I can see how one maybe should be there... _________________ John

Down at the bottom, attached to the body, not the door.

Just put in the original seat belts. Washed the webbing with dish soap, cleaned/lubricated the catches. I know they don't offer the same protection as new ones but they turned out nice..... great match for the cloth seats.
At the risk of sounding OCD, does anyone have their original belts installed and can tell me which side the catch goes on. I have all 3 installed so that the adjustable part (male end) goes in your right hand and the catch (female end) in your left. _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

As most of you know, the center seat stand mat for the front 1/3-2/3 seat is NLA. I had the original mat but it was in pretty bad shape. I used that as a shape template and cut a new center mat out of a new driver side mat. I still need to cut inserts to cover the exposed seat frame but I think the end result is an acceptable solution to having no center mat at all.

looks good!
so did you just lay the drivers seat stand mat horizontally and go for it?
I really wish these were made. I could use one as well _________________

Yes, if you lay it horizontally there is plenty of material. It is not the full mat though, I cut it to size using the original (or what was left of it) as a template. Since it is not molded like the original was, I expect that it will not stay in place without a little help. Once I have the frame opening patched I plan on using 3M adhesive to tack it in place, at least at the bottom. The top probably needs to stay loose so I can easily remove the spare. _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

look around for holes...I had remnants of mine and I seem to remember "push pins" holding it in place. you are correct, it needs to flop forward to get the spare out. it was glued like no ones business on the bottom _________________

Finally got the rear window installed. My son and I tried to do this ourselves and had no luck (he is still not speaking to me ). I gave up and took it to a local glass shop. It only took 2 guys and 10 minutes for them to install it. It was hard to watch.... I thought for sure they were going to break it, they way they pounded on it from the outside. They used some sort of blue spray lubricant - almost looked like windex - and the cord they used was thicker than mine, maybe 1/4 or 3/8 inch. Glad to get that done before dropping it off for winter storage.

I could use three of them! One single cab, one double cab, and one 9-seat Transporter. _________________ John
