|
|
Hi Guys, I hope you can help me with a few answers. I went IRS on my buggy project, with Type 3 drum brakes at the back. Would the connecting link plate (arrowed in the pic) of a Beetle work on a Type 3, are they the same?
Would Beetle rear brake cylinders (with the bleeding nipple below the brake line connector) work on Type 3 rear brakes, and would one be able to fully bleed the brakes? Thanks! _________________ Please say Hi to us at

I pulled this from my other post. 64-65 Wide 5 Type 3 rear drums use the same brake shoes as the 66-74 type 3's and those shoes are the same as the 73 and up super beetle front shoes. You can also use the super beetle front wheel cylinders for type 3 rear replacements. But I would think the plate would be type 3 specific because the drums are a larger diameter than the bug. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. It fits type 4 (411 and 412)as well. I have used in a pinch ones slightly modified from a late bus....about 1976...sorry I can't remember exactly which one. Ray |

The only difference in the type 3 rear brakes is the width of the Brake shoes and brake drum. 30mm for the beetle versus 45mm for the type 3.In other words the type 3 rear brakes are half a brake pad wider than the bug brakes.
All of the bug brake hardware should work on the type 3 rear brakes except the (brake shoe),hold down pins. The pins that hold the brake pads down to the brake backing plate,(those need to be longer to accomodate the wider brake shoes).. The diameter of the drum is no larger. The beetle hardware will work great. _________________ "We buy things we don't need,..with money we don't have,...to impress people we don't even like". |

The width and radius are different, the brake drum is of course different, the wheel cylinders are different, the two smaller brake shoe retaining springs(at the adjuster housing), as well as the pins. EDIT: duh, I forgot backing plates

30mm is early Beetle/Ghia - `68+ is 40mm including Beetle/Ghias/Things

Actually 'normal' Beetle/Ghia/Thing IRS pins will work fine.

The diameter is quite larger. From 9.112" (legal limit) to 9.782(new)-9.822" (legal limit).
Supers fronts use 23.8mm wheel cylinders, while your typical Type III wheel cylinder is 22.2 - I think there's a catch on the very early Type III's. |

Does anyone know whether the lower (short) brake springs are similar to any other VW springs? I can't get the correct ones here and the shipping cost of a spring kit from the USA is disproportionate to the cost of the springs (about $25)! I can easily get most Type 1 and Type 2 springs, so if any are similar that would help a lot.
Thanks

I have installed type three brakes on several type ones and this part is the same and works just fine.
Also the I of for rear wheel cylinders being same as super beetle front is correct also. I did find out that the rear cylinders for a square back have a wider piston than the fast back or notchback version. Old school vw parts guy said they used to use those in super beetles that customers complained of poor front braking. |
