Yup, the A/C was pretty ineffective AND the condenser had a 3 blade metal fan and a shroud. Without a scoop there just wasn't enough air flow.

Update, I made the compressor mount this weekend.
The compressor has to sit in a spot that has no support beneath it, so i had to get creative
the fresh air port had to be moved over an inch too.
You can see here that the t4 enine is longer than the T1, there was no room for two belts, I had to make 1 work.
I am a little worried about the fan slipping with so little contact with the pulley, I will run it like this for now and keep an eye on it, I don't intend to spin it over 6k rpm anyways.
I am also going to upgrade to a 90amp alt _________________ 1971 ghia build:

A double row crank pulley would be great.

Or a serpentine belt with a tensioner. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Ummm... what's up with the nut on the alternator? that one should be holding the fan on the back & I don't think that it will work properly to hold the shims in place on the pulley. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Just making sure.
Are you running a dry sump on that thing? What's the oil container for on the pass side of the engine bay? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

You should look into some of the water-to-air intercooler setups, this way you can still have short intake lengths to reduce turbo lag & still get your intake temps down.

So i ive run into a confusing oil control issue with the new engine, originally i built it with a 26mm t1 pump, i noticed sky high oil pressure which would crash at high rpm (oil light came on at 3500 rpm! )
So i suspected that the oil was either taking too long to drain back to the sump, or the oil pump was too big (i have a 914 windage tray with some extra holes drilled in it, apparently not enough, next time this engine is open I plan to swiss cheese it)
I pulled the pump and replaced it with a 21mm unit, now the oil light stays off and oil pressure doesn't crash, but as rpm rises, the oil press drops ... i think oil is still taking too long to drain back and i am sucking up air, the oil is 10w30. I may drain it and try 0w20, because my oil pressure at low rpm is still high by about 20psi
High oil pressure also isn't too good for the turbo seals, i noticed it puffing some blue smoke, I hope this goes away once the oil presure is normal.
I am trying to hit 10psi per 1000 rpm warm
UPDATE: so i had a chance to break down whats happening a little better, 10w30 is the right viscosity as ive hit my target pressure, however ...
The persistent symptom is that at sustained high rpm (like hwy driving) the pressure drops to about 20 psi regardless of rpm when warmed up, however if i rev it after idling for a min at a light ( after allowing oil to drain back to the sump), then the oil pressure will be correct reaching 40-50 psi
possible issues:
- windage tray is blocking oil return - strong case for this based on the evidence, this will require a full engine teardown
- loose seal between pump body and case - very possible, its a shadek pump, i could pull it and plug the output on the pump body
- 2nd oil relief valve spring is weak - it is common practice to delete this, i will try this next _________________ 1971 ghia build:

I’m kinda confused by the windage tray being an issue. The windage tray is designed to help separate the oil from the crankshaft & to help decrease the crankshaft’s tendency to cram all the oil into the driver side cylinder head. I have a hard time believing that a factory part designed for high performance use would be the cause of your issues.
While you have the engine apart, since you’re using a type4 mill, check to make sure that the oil pickup tube wasn’t cracked by someone over tightening the sump bolt. This sound like more of your problem as a crack here would start to draw in air once it was no longer submerged in oil at higher ROM _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
