I considered those other locations:
Factory installed a/c in ghias did not work awesome, nether did my 911 sc factory a/c and both had no fans.
Putting the condenser in front of the beam would not allow for a fan, for those hot days in traffic jams
I have an oil cooler in the fender well behind the headlight bucket, so no room there.
I can manage fabricating funky custom parts to work around the condensers hanging under the rear torsion tube, its just lots of work Crying or Very sad

Yup, the A/C was pretty ineffective AND the condenser had a 3 blade metal fan and a shroud. Without a scoop there just wasn't enough air flow.

Got rained on this weekend so I finished the condenser assembly
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Added some home depot rock guards to it too
I need to figure out how to make a hose that has #8 on one side and #6 on the other for the crossover hose from one condenser to the other

Update, I made the compressor mount this weekend.
The compressor has to sit in a spot that has no support beneath it, so i had to get creative
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

the fresh air port had to be moved over an inch too.

You can see here that the t4 enine is longer than the T1, there was no room for two belts, I had to make 1 work.

I am a little worried about the fan slipping with so little contact with the pulley, I will run it like this for now and keep an eye on it, I don't intend to spin it over 6k rpm anyways.
I am also going to upgrade to a 90amp alt

A double row crank pulley would be great.

Or a serpentine belt with a tensioner.

All good choices but anything thicker would mean reworking the turbo pipes that will be running beneath that pulley

(I plan on using my turbo stuff with the a/c)

Perhaps if i went smaller with the a\c pulley, then there would be no issue

The wisdom of this forum has prevailed, I changed it to two belts

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My breast tin no longer fits and I will have to figure something out, i think i will be ok with the turbo pipe clearance because of the super small pulley.
I used a heavily modified golf mk3 water pump (or ps can’t remember) pulley

Update: I got it to fit with much swearing and bending, but its very tight as you can see by the pic

Last weekend i assembled a fresh 2056 t4 with a web86a 112lc turbo cam.
This weekend i installed it
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After cam break in and chasing some leaks, i took it for a brisk drive to set the rings
Boost is capped at .5 bar till it gets Fully broken in

The a/c is ready to get charged, just waiting on gages and r12a to arrive

An uncommonly impressive integration. Very cool. I bet it goes.

Ummm... what's up with the nut on the alternator? that one should be holding the fan on the back & I don't think that it will work properly to hold the shims in place on the pulley.

its not a back fan nut, its an early gen nut that I plucked from a swap meet for a buck
I think I modified it a bit to work

Just making sure.

Are you running a dry sump on that thing? What's the oil container for on the pass side of the engine bay?

still wet sump, I used to run a dry sump but swapped it out for an accusump, less dry starts
The car was originally an autostick so i repurposed the tank for methanol/water injection since i dont have an intercooler ... here is the pump I am using:

You should look into some of the water-to-air intercooler setups, this way you can still have short intake lengths to reduce turbo lag & still get your intake temps down.

ya I have thought about it, packaging is the biggest challenge, probably would need to fab something custom
Its definitely on my wishlist of things i need to keep intake temps low

Lag is pretty low, the turbo is a garret T3 .48 comp/.53 turbine, not the biggest turbo, but it spools quick ... around the same time the cam "turns on"

PostPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2018 5:52 am    Post subject: Re: CLKWRK's build Reply with quote

So i ive run into a confusing oil control issue with the new engine, originally i built it with a 26mm t1 pump, i noticed sky high oil pressure which would crash at high rpm (oil light came on at 3500 rpm! Surprised )
So i suspected that the oil was either taking too long to drain back to the sump, or the oil pump was too big (i have a 914 windage tray with some extra holes drilled in it, apparently not enough, next time this engine is open I plan to swiss cheese it)

I pulled the pump and replaced it with a 21mm unit, now the oil light stays off and oil pressure doesn't crash, but as rpm rises, the oil press drops ... i think oil is still taking too long to drain back and i am sucking up air, the oil is 10w30. I may drain it and try 0w20, because my oil pressure at low rpm is still high by about 20psi

High oil pressure also isn't too good for the turbo seals, i noticed it puffing some blue smoke, I hope this goes away once the oil presure is normal.
I am trying to hit 10psi per 1000 rpm warm

UPDATE: so i had a chance to break down whats happening a little better, 10w30 is the right viscosity as ive hit my target pressure, however ...

The persistent symptom is that at sustained high rpm (like hwy driving) the pressure drops to about 20 psi regardless of rpm when warmed up, however if i rev it after idling for a min at a light ( after allowing oil to drain back to the sump), then the oil pressure will be correct reaching 40-50 psi

possible issues:
- windage tray is blocking oil return - strong case for this based on the evidence, this will require a full engine teardown
- loose seal between pump body and case - very possible, its a shadek pump, i could pull it and plug the output on the pump body
- 2nd oil relief valve spring is weak - it is common practice to delete this, i will try this next

I finally pulled the engine and tore it down to get at the windage tray.
I admit some of the holes i made in it were fuelled by rage

I’m kinda confused by the windage tray being an issue. The windage tray is designed to help separate the oil from the crankshaft & to help decrease the crankshaft’s tendency to cram all the oil into the driver side cylinder head. I have a hard time believing that a factory part designed for high performance use would be the cause of your issues.

While you have the engine apart, since you’re using a type4 mill, check to make sure that the oil pickup tube wasn’t cracked by someone over tightening the sump bolt. This sound like more of your problem as a crack here would start to draw in air once it was no longer submerged in oil at higher ROM
