I am going to be making up some handy decals for the engine compartment. This is my first shot.

Did I get the order correct?

Does it look like it would make sense to a rookie who might be changing plug wires, cap, etc..

Thanks for your input.

Print 'em up on good material and try to keep the prices low. I'd consider buying a sheet!

Best!

Great idea, but It's the same for all VW Boxer engine (not the timing), no need to put 2.1L. The picture is right, but sadly, 1/3 of the van out there have the distributor drive gear in the wrong position, so that mean that the wire position on the distributor cap can be 90/180 deg off.

You could make a bigger one or more small one and put valve adjustment and other stuff.

Feel free to use anything you want in there:

The sticker I created years ago finally flaked off and I couldn't find the file to print another. I made up this new diagram.

The reason to make a new one was recently elevated by having my distributer fail on a trail during Syncro Safari last week. In case you're wondering, there's no shops in Panguitch, Utah to loan a timing light, but the NAPA there will be happy to sell you one for $83.

Please tell me ASAP if it's in error in any way. If not, feel free to download it and print it on something to stick it on or near your engine hatch.

i would add on your sticker which way to rotate the dist for timing advance and retard. the rotation arrow helps however. very handy when tuning Seat of the Pants.

Good idea - something I like to have handy:

Yeah, everyone knows that but sometimes in the moment (along the road, at night, tired) a memory aid can be useful.

No, because the diesel spark plugs are totally different.

Casey, no aspersions intended. Diesel spark plugs deserve just as much love as gasoline spark plugs. Sorry if I offended.

A motion for the sticker to also include a drawing of the crank pulley showing its rotation, and the location of the timing mark. In the stress of a field problem it is easy to make a 50/50 error (rotation) plus the timing mark is easily confused with the way VW did it, and the reference mark (an unmarked edge on the block casting) is hard to see on the side of the road, under duress, etc.

i like the addition. V notch = 5 BTDC, U notch = TDC

yeah, the stress of a dead engine on the road can play havoc with clear thinking.. "It rotates clockwise. Or is that from the front?" maybe in fine print at the bottom it should also say "Breathe"

Or 5° ATDC if a Digjet.

But pretty easy to take the image already offered and add specific info as desired.

Ahwahnee - Thanks for the Advance/Retard suggestion. Added this and a border to Rev 1.
