Yep. As far as I can tell VW modified the fan shroud stamping as little as possible. Note that the 73 shroud has the dog house. If it doesn't its a 40HP Stale Air shroud.

Yeah, that is an EMPI replica 36-horse shroud, definitely not the best performance piece. Check in the engine forum, Jake Raby compared some shrouds and that one scored very low, any VW-made 1600 shroud will probably do better. Being an older empi part, that might be better than the new ones, but still not a very good choice. |

The one in the craigslist posting is an aftermarket piece, not factory, and definitely not 73 Thing shroud. |

This is a shroud for a '73 Thing. See how it's a little flatter across the top? I'm 95% sure the one you referenced will work, but it's not a Thing shroud per se.
