Picked up an 86 westy, its complete and came with a ton of westy related bits stuffed in the cabinets...I need to give it a good scrubbing and see if the appliances work or not...but that will happen later.

Here's a teaser pic.

It has 230k on the original motor, newer tranny.

ran excellent on its 80 mile trip back home, I am thinking about either getting a new engine for it or start looking for a subaru....but I am starting to like the vetec swap due to cheap everything on those.

The water jackets do look like there's an oil-ish residue coming from them but nothing is dripping ( I would say moist is a better term )
but 230K is ALOT of miles and i'm looking for trouble/worry free, I think I could do all the basics on this motor and I would still be paranoid everytime I set out on a journy.

I'm pretty picky though, my carat has 48k on the new engine and I still get chills about rod bolt failure, oh what to do.

I've wanted to ask this question several times. People in the states talking they have x amount of ks on their vans. I'm on my second American Vanagon and both have been in miles. What's happening, are your vans from Europe? I doubt they are from Canada.

Uh no, k is the SI prefix for 1000.

200k miles = 200,000 miles.

So when you talk about it in shorthand and say 200k you really mean 200,000 miles.

Not to be confused with 200k being 200,000km.

Technically if you were going report 200 kilo-kilometers you could report it as 200 Mm, (megameters).
(or 0.2 Megameters)

While we are at it, 101.325 kPa = 1 atm. I spent the whole day taking the FE so my mind is going nuts with numbers and calculations right now.

1000 poise Cool

EDIT: I also don't know of anyone who uses poise for viscosity.

Very confusing. When we say 100K it means 100km, 100,000k means km. We used the term klicks to refer to Km which is how we measure our distance and there is kpl.

I have a heck of a time calculating my 'mileage' ( term used generically) as I have to convert your miles and gal into our km and L's. I base 4 of our litres is one US gal.

Both my Westy and Scooby Blu are American so they are miles an gallons.

Think I'll just forget your answer as it confuses me even more Exclamation Rolling Eyes Razz Razz

Hey - as a former physics teacher nothing bothers me more than the abuse, misuse or non use of units. The suffix K by itself means 1000 so 200Kmiles would mean 200,000miles. 200,000 kilometers would be 200K km. Not including the units - i.e. miles or km makes the 200K meaninless.

For the sake of conversion between miles and kilometers,
1km = .625 miles

well, when you say 100k you should really say 100km, when you want to say 100,000 km you should say 200kkm, or really 200Mm.

Now don't get me wrong, I find the customary system of units outdated and annoying, but so does every scientist and engineer, with the possible exception of Civil engineers who seem to have to work in Customary units more than other disciplines.

That being said I always found the convention for fuel economy to make more sense in Customary units, Miles per gallon, i.e. distance/volume. Whereas the convention for metric measurement is L/100km, or volume/100 distance.

One way lets you see how far you can go with the fuel you have(ie I have 10gallons, and I get 20 miles per gallon, so I can travel 200 miles before needed to refuel), the other way you can see how many liters you will need to go that distance. So if I will be traveling 1000km and I get 12L/100km then I need 120Liters to go 1000km.

Now thats not to say its easy enough to do the math either way, but since they are the reciprocal of each other you just need to realize that when your doing the conversion.

Here is a conversion calculator that can make you life easyer when doing this conversion:
http://home.comcast.net/~plutarch/mpg.html

Then you also need to watch out when you see someone from the UK talking about MPG, they very well may be talking about Imperial gallons, and imperial pints.
