1970 Ghia motor numbers beginning with AE, would the spark plug be the larger longer thread WR8AP or the WR8AC size?

Thanks

Please see the enclosed picture. It may explain my confusion.

Depends on the heads. Original heads are 1/2" but aftermarket could be 1/2" or 3/4".

When I started the engine for the first time, the plug in the center shot out of the cylinder with the spark plug wire attached. I shut the motor down at once.

You'll see why I thought it might be a longer plug or thicker thread.... What do you think, or what do I try and do next? I haven't been able to get the plug on the left ( new plug ) started inside the cylinder.

Yup, it pulled the helicoil out. Not sure if you can re insert another one. I didn't have one shoot out, but the threads were all bunged up on one of mine, got a tap from napa and it worked great.

Thanks guys, I do believe that you're correct and it is a helicoil. A buddy of mine just said the same thing. I am not sure how to approach the situation right now. Do I pull the head and take it somewhere?

You might try inserting a new helicoil coil but it would be good to check the heads threads with a the tap for that size of helicoil and if it is too loose your going to have to drill and tap it for a larger one. You can do it in the car but it's really tricky and you will get some aluminum down in the cylinder that will need to blow out on first start up (it may knock a little). Best solution would be to replace the cylinder head. Some shops will weld them up and re-drill them but it's got to be done right and you have to have the head off the car to do that. Spark Plug Hole head Repair, any advice? Is a link to when I did it, but mine failed to hold and I had to pull the head and have it welded a second time. I just changed the plug today: Spark Plug after 3000 miles in the type 1 1800cc engine and the new plug held fine, I used a torque wrench and torqued it to 24 ft/lbs.

I would just try inserting a new helicoil first. The problem is finding something that will seal around it. The local VW shop here uses Red Thread Locker but it burns out. There may be a product somewhere made just for this application but I don't know what it would be? Perhaps Loctite 2620 high temperature high strength threadlocker available here at Fastenal. The stuff is good for 650' F!

Yes I think I am going to try and do this first. I will need to at the very least lower the engine to do it. Even after removing the battery, I couldn't see anything when I was trying to replace the spark plug that came out when the engine was first started.
Thanks
