I'm considering building a buggy using this shell http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=719550 and building my own chassis incorperated into a 67 or older vw pan for registration purposes. My question is what are the differences between a bug, thing, gia, and type 3 pan (length and width). wider and longer is better.

Ghia, Thing and bug are all the same pan, same length and dimensions, the only thing that changes is the floor pans. so if your going balls out on a car that wont matter. T3 however is a whole different world. the frame head is totally different, the torsion housings are removable on some and so on. don't use a T3 pan.

i would contact the seller and ask what pans he uses. they look like ghia/ thing pans actually.

I'm not planning on using the stock torsions. possibly extending the chassis looking for possibly a longer pan. I want to go with the longest pan possible and extending it if necessary. looking for 115 to117 wheel base. I plan on using aluminum for floor pan and using the stock tunnel.

Acording to the add you can use a VW type 1 bug or superbeetle pan as well as a Thing (type 181) or Karmann Ghia pan.

all the pans are the same length. your best be would be cutting the front end off and extending there and possibly moving the rear back a few inches.

OK cool. I've talked to the seller, he said that he uses any pan and replaces with wider halfs. I was just wondering about lenght. I was thinking about using the front & rear bulk heads along with the tunnel, but now I don't think I will. Do you guys see any complications with registration in Nevada using only the tunnel, or maybe part of the tunnel?
