Well, the truck came to my Dad's house today and picked his 71 up. Should be here in a few days
Sorry the pic is blury. I should have a ton of pics when it gets here though. Can't wait! This car has been in our family for almost 30 years and I've always wanted it. It's a CA car, spent it's whole life there except the last 2 years where it's been parked in his garage in IL. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Well, a very dirty, road salted, dead battery-ed, 71 Ghia arrived today. My dad has been promising me this car for 30 years, and he sends it with a flat tire and a dead battery. However, after a quick swap of the battery with my Bug, and a quick tire fill, here it is. Needs to be cleaned and polished, but here it is:
Also hasn't been registered in 10 years, and he can't find the title. That should be fun, it was last registered in CA and I live in WV. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Nice, I'd love to maybe go for a cruise or something once I figure out how to register it. I wish I'd taken pics of it in the driveway, or up on the truck. The rockers and floor pans are original, and a thing of beauty. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Thanks. It was redone in the early 90's in what was an original color to 66. Not an original 71 color. The carpet is sun faded although it's been in a garage for the last 20 years so I don't know why. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Found some old pics of the car:
1st one is early 80s (like 83 or 84), second one is 88 or 89.The more I think the more memories I have in this car. We saw E.T. in it at the drive-in in 81, Dad used to take me to work in it (he worked for a studio in Hollywood) all kinds of neat things, _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

He once got pulled over just because the cop wanted to know what he'd edited. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Here are some pics from today:

Very nice looking car!! I recently bought a 1971 Ghia that is all great engine-wise but needs a new interior and some bodywork, again, mostly inside. I'm new to the Ghia fixing, but had a '71 campmobile bus that I fixed up when I was younger. Any words of wisdom in getting started?

It'd be great to keep the CA blue plates (but I know you have to register it in your state). This is a weird coincidence because I had a cop pull me over in Los Angeles about 8 years ago when I was driving my Ghia just because he wanted to check out my car. I couldn't believe it.
Really nice car. Congrats and have fun with it! |

I've been racking my brain trying to think of a way to keep the CA blue plates. For the memories, and so everyone who sees it knows it's a CA car. I can't think of a way. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

What kind of body work does it need exactly? Do you have any pics? _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I know. Having the CA blue plates, especially yours being personalized and the fond memories of it, would be great to keep on the car. I know you said you don't have the title (your Dad can't find it) but I'm pretty sure the CA DMV would show your Dad as the last registered owner in their computer system. You can go to this page on their site and click on "Application for Duplicate Title" (5th line down) http://dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsreg_alpha.htm
Maybe that might work.
I do know that if a CA car with the older blue plates gets registered in another state and then you want to try and register it again in CA with the blue plates, the years allowed for doing that stops at 1962. This is what I was told when I went to the DMV. Although they did say that next year they are going to up that year to 1972. I experienced this situation because my KG had the blue plates then I moved out of state for school for a few years and registered it in NM, then moved back to CA and wanted to register it with my original blue plates again (which I still had, NM DMV didn't ask for them back).
That was my experience for what it’s worth! |
