Well I don't own one of these gizmos (yet), but I am thinking of getting one to have in my tool box. I, of course don't want to spend any money, but will give me good information to check the coolant temps in my watercooled cars and maybe some other stuff (my bus has all of the gauges already) so that would not be the primary use?

Randy... get one.

I used mine to check engine temps, exhaust temps and head temps. It showed me that my VDO oil temp gauge is reading 40 degrees higher than it actually is.

For $40, it's a bargain.

I've used the Snap-on/Blue point version of that and I love it, you'd never believe the things you suddenly need to know the temp of. Much better price though. The range seems lower than the snap-on one as one of the things it's handy for is reading individual exhaust port temps on multi carb engines to check mixture.
