Okay, am I the only one who didn't know that there is a pull-out extension on the oil filler tube?

Seriously???

I've had the van over a freakin' year, and today I notice that there's a little pull-out tube on the oil filler, ONLY BECAUSE IT STUCK ON THE DAMN FUNNEL.

That's how clueless I was, it took me jamming the funnel in too tight to try to get it to stay in place to find this. When I went to remove the funnel, it pulled the tube out a little bit.

What's this I say, hmm, it pulls out about 6 inches, meaning I don't really need the dang funnel.

So, my question is, why didn't you, my supposed Sambanista Vanagon friends, TELL me ths thing was there??

Very Happy Very Happy

Been there done that! However I wasn't brave like you to post a thread on it. Smile

I "discovered" the oil filler tube about a 1.5 years into ownership (I think on my 3rd oil change). Doh!

HA, I'm owner number something or nother, I ain't got no stinkin owners manual.

I'm seriously smelling a cover-up or something here. When I do forum serach for oil filler tuber, I get ONE hit, THIS thread!!! I think I've stumbled on to a vast conspiracy of information hoarding here.

I completely laughed out loud when I discovered the extension earlier. Very Happy Very Happy

Maybe that explains why the owner manual for my 83 1/2 was missing pages.

Same here. I think it was several oil changes before I figured that out.

Four months lateron a ski trip, I ran out of washer fluid. The last few miles before the exit while blinded by salty slush, I thought to myself, “I wonder where it goes?” Pulled into a truckstop, and as I was getting out of the van, I threw the owners manual at my passenger and said, “I’m getting more, find out where the @#$& it goes!” I thought he was kidding when he told me.

Then, four years later, I figured out that the storage under the back seat was accessible from the front. Every time I accessed the storage, I was folding the Zbed forward.

Good times, good times……

I have to say Hiram, I did see it here many months back. I even forgot about it during the last oil change. But sure enough, there it is.

Even worse, I do have my owner's manual, but who ever looks at that before changing the oil? And considering all of the "design attributes" of the vanagon, I was not surprised to see how difficult it was to fill the oil (until I found the pull out).

Yeah, not sure why I was searching for root vegetables anyway. That doesn't make any sense.

I thought this was a little-known secret only handed down from generation to generation... My Grandfather showed me on our '81 when I was 8...

Hey... Does anyone have a picture of the extension... to help guide those still in the dark on the magic of the FILLER NECK EXTENSION TUBE!

The owner's manual doesn't even have a picture, it just says to pull it out of the filler neck... (Pg 86. Vehicle Care section on Engine Oil) Not exactly the most precise directions when you can't really tell it's there when you look directly at it...

Don't feel bad. Same for me. I was putting oil in it and a coworker walked by and said. Why not use the exstension. I said what? He pulled it out. I felt dumb since I always used a funnel too. I still use the funnel but now I know its there.

I was looking at mine and thinking there must be a better way.
There's manuals for nearly all the old aircooled buses on here, is there a source for digital manuals for vanagons?

3+ years for me Hiram Embarassed I did some work on an '84 for a freind, one of the tasks was changing the oil for her. when I went to take the cap off, the extension was sort of stuck to the cap and it slid out. "what the f++k" and stood in amazment tosssing the funnel I had brought out aside! then I thought, that maybe mine was missing it and maybe I'll have to do a switcharoo Cool to obtain this masterful piece. But it was not, it was just stuck in there pretty good, problaby because it never got used Laughing and then I felt dumb.
I have shown a few vanagon friends at campouts this oil tube extension wonder and they didn't know about it either so Then I felt like a genius!!!!
