I was getting out of my van at the grocery store when this lady approached me and ask if I was homeless. I said no I'm not why do you ask, she said that the van made me look like we were living in it.
Has anyone else had something that stupid said to them? _________________ 83 air-cooled Westy

I always answer yes to that question, then hit them up for money. I explain that I've been sober for a few days now but the voices and spiders are making me want to go back in the bottle (helps to talk to non-existent people over your shoulder). Helps pay for the gas and is great for laughs on a trip. Besides, I have no shame, I panhandled my way across Europe in the 70's. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

Ive had people ask me that before.
I think the dumbest question that anyone's ever asked me about my Vanagon was "Do you actually drive that?" As I was getting out of it after driving 650 miles that day. I said "no." and just walked away. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

I do get the impression (nobody's actually said as much) that some people think I'm broke and have to drive an old Van.
We all know that driving a 27 year old Vanagon is a choice.
If I would have been broke when I got this, it would still be as we said in the army "more of a pillbox then a tank". |

The most enjoyable one's (this happens a few times a year at least) are when we go off the beaten path and do some serious 4x4'ing (ie. granny gear/winching for hours) and taking our time.
Once at our destination, sometimes we encounter guys on quads or really done out 4x4's and they ask ..
how did you get that here ?
did you come from the other direction because there is no way you could've made it up that rockface, etc...
When I answer.. yes.. we can through the same way you just came in.. the look is priceless.
It happens every year in the bush/desert.
Even better is when the Delica's with us.
What the hell is that ? That looks like an ugly toy !
Well buddy.. it got us farther than your trucks. _________________ '86 Westy 2.1

Its not much the stupidest thing ppl ask me about Rose... its just the general stupidity of ppl when they see her period.
"So, what's that? A fridge?" Yep!
"And is that a stove, and sink? WOW!" Yep... stove, sink, fridge...
"You could live in that thing." No shit Shirlock... Its a Westy...
Then I go into telling them how the back folds down to sleep 2, the top pops and a bunk for 2 more is up there. And the front seats swivel to face each other and eat off a table... Then if they are still listening... I go into telling them about the WBX and its sad specs and all the different kinds of motors that can be put in the back. I usually dont get that far before they have walked away. _________________ Brandon...'83 Westy "Rose" |

Been lurking a while on the samba, trying to absorb all the knowledge here. Just had to add mine:
Was working in my Westy, pulling out the the battery and cleaning the battery compartment, when I hear some late teen / early twenties girls walk by.
First: Oh holy shit, that's a vanagon! One of the camper ones!
Second: Nice! I bet the guy that owns that smokes a lot of pot.
Confused, I raise my head and look out the window in bewilderment. They take off, embarrassed.
So now I'm off to see if I can find a hidden stash in my van. |

I'll give you a hint: it's by the oil fill extension tube, next to the stove burner key. |

"The engine's in the front, right?"
I've had a half dozen people assume that the engine somehow fits in between the dashboard and the front of the van.
"That thing run on propane?"
-Gas station passerby.
"You got any weed?"
-Drug addict from work
"How much pot have you smoked this evening?"
-Cop who stopped me for license plate light. Unfortunately for him I don't do drugs or drink alcohol.
A little more forgivable, but I've had people ask if my van's a Mercedes due to the rims. _________________ '84 Vanagon w/ Subaru 2.2 Swap

I was describing my van to somebody so he would know where to find me in the park and he says, " Yeah, I know what a Vanagon Camper looks like ---- are you a hippie or something?". |

I let my 19 year old brother drive my Westy to school today. He came home and asked: "So... How come your car is cooler than mine?" ... responding to comments and admiration from his peers.
He drives an '89 turbo Dodge Shadow.
I said: "Can you cook pancakes in yours?
...I didn't think so."

I'm parked outside the Sterling Renaissance Festival with the top up because it's easier to make sandwiches before we go in. A group of 18 or 19 year olds knock on the side of the van and say,
"Um, can you tell us why your roof is like that?"
I was good and gave them and gave the usual spiel about the camper, because they had never seen a Westy before. My then 12 yr old and I proceeded to spend the rest of day laughing ourselves silly over the smart aleck things I could have answered. _________________ '83 Westy |
