|
|
I'm wanting to run 17 x 7 porsche twists all around on my '66. I'm looking at the boxter front wheels, with I believe a 52mm offset if I remember. I'm fine with the drum brakes, so I was planning buying the porsche pattern drums for CIP. I have a stock width beam and stock short axle setup out back. Will I need spacers anywhere, or?? Will I need to narrow the beam to get them too look right? I'm not worried about tucking the wheels up in the fenders, but I would like them even or just inside the fender...
Thanks for any help.

Also does anyone know what the original application was for the 5 lug ball joint porsche pattern drums, or the rear porsche pattern drums? Its says they are german, are they buying them that way or drilling them from blanks?
Thanks,

You will need a 2" narrowed beam up front and either long axles or a 3/4" spacer in the rear.
I just did something similar to my Super but I also did it to a 59 beetle. Your tire will stick out a half inch in the front and the wheel will bottom out on the spring plate in the rear. _________________ TheSamba members-only discount - Samba24

Wow thanks for the info, someone who knows what they are talking about!
The beam thing is no big deal, but i really didn't want to tear out the trans and change that crap all over. What would be the lesser of two evils: the spacers or run a set of adapters? I'm not really that fond of either one, but this is just a stock engine daily driver.
Thanks for the help and suggestions,

You can always do disc brakes and we can make bolt patterns exactly the size you need.

Believe me, if the budged would support it, I would be calling you up for a set. I know your disc setups are high quality. As I said though, the stock drums are just fine for the daily driver with a stock 1600 single port. At the moment my play money is going towards rebuilding the turbo engine in my '72. New alum block, Pauter rockers, and a new Barry Grant carb to name a few things have put a pretty big dent in the play fund!
Do you sell spacers that will work with the drums? After looking around a bit, I think that would be my best bet.
Thanks,

I'll just chime in and say I put 17x7 cup IIs on the front of my 66 last weekend. I'm not getting any rubbing and I didn't have to narrow my beam but I also converted the front to discs at the same time. _________________ ---

well if anything the discs are a little wider than the redrilled drums will be. I may just try putting them on there and see how they look. Anyone have a source for nice spacers for out back?

So you are building a turbo motor and keeping the stock brakes?
Do not install spacers with something that is going to twist like your set up. Get a direct bolt set up. _________________ TheSamba members-only discount - Samba24

No the turbo setup is in my '72 street/stip car. The porsche wheels are for the '66 I have. Like I said, daily driver with 1600 single port power. I doubt I'll be twisting anything off with that thing!

im pasting an email from Alan
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/album95
" The wheels were repro 17x7.5 with ET52 - all the guards are stock - i had to narrow the ball joint beam 80mm (using cb performance discs and dropped spindles). With a standard beam the wheels fit under guards but had very limited turning circle. i therefore had to run the narrowed beam and 20mm spacers each side. The rear had swing axle (short axles) with cb performance discs and he had to run 35mm spacers to stop the wheels from hitting the spring plates. i think a different offset rim would have fitted better " |

Here is for anyone in the future wanting to put the 17x7ET55 porsche twist rims on their vw.
With a 2 inch narrow beam, the outer lip of the rim will sit .1 inch narrower than stock.
