The '56 vert I'm currently restoring came with the top frame, but the latches were missing. I'm looking to buy a set but have found a couple different styles, and would like to know which are correct for my car. I've found some with rounded ends on the handle, and some with more squared ends - can anyone tell me which would be correct for a '56?

This seems to be a genuine '55 model car : ribbed doors, batwing, single-tip, straight shifter, ... but no semaphores, and bullet indicators ? I thought that started with model year '56 ? |

Semaphores were dropped for US market specification cars in June of 1955,, still the 55 model year, when US government required cars destined to be delivered to the USA to have front and rear blinkiing style turn indicators. So that Kabriolett is probably a June to Aug 1st of 1955 produced USA spec car.

For USA market semaphores and egg taillights were replaced with bullets and snowflake taillights around May 20th 1955 (Give or take a day or two). These bullet '55 verts are actually more rare than semaphore verts because they were made for around 2.2 - 2.5 months.
Here is my July 9th 1955 Kabriolet.
Here is my good friend's May 25th 1955 Kabriolet.

Hello,
writing from France and introduce you my new 56' vert, i own it since one week.
It's a solid car who was restored in the eighties and was stocked, so didin't run for about 30 years.
One of the most important things to do right now is a new top. I started to restore the hardware and it's going to be blasted in a few days.
I would like to ask a few questions :
1) on a 56' vert, am i supposed to have a switch for the dome light when the top is open like on this pic :
( pic found on the samba ) .. My car does not have this switch and i think it's right but want to be sure.
2) is there a difference between sedan and vert for the semaphore lenses ?
I have this model and want to be sure it's correct :
3) i'm ready to order a new canva top and hesitating about the supplier.
Can tou tell me where you ordered yours (lenny ? chuck ? himmelservice ? other ? )
Thanks a lot and sorry for my english
Christophe. |

Thx 56 cabrio
ok for the lenses, i will order the new repro from Kaefer nostalgie.
For the switch, it's interesting to know you have it on your vert.. do you know the month of production of your's ?
I can tell there's no screw hole in my rear bow, but maybe it has been changed.
another thing is there's no switch on the wiring sheet i have, witch is the same than https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug_toaug55.jpg
Do you have the correct wiring sheet including the switch ?
Thanks a lot. |

My vert was built on August 9, 1955.( Super early 1956)
I'm positive your vert should have the switch. _________________ F#CK CANCER

The switch is present to prevent the dome light from being left on by accident while the top is in the open position. If the bulb stays on it will burn the headliner while the top is folded up. This switch kills power to the light even if the switch on the dash is on. My January '54 vert has one too.... and so did two '56 verts that I've owned in the past. _________________ Even my nuts are plated.....

Hey, you guys are wonderfull
I was asking myself what this swith under the dash was for.
The guy who sold me the car told me it was probably an aftermarket swith for fog lights or something like that
Thank you very much for the pic showing the wired up
I now understand why the wiring sheet Is wrong : it's a sedan one.
Does Anyone knows where to find à switch for the rear bow ?
Thx

Here is a great pic showing how its wired up on a 1960 . The power shut off switch in the pic should be under your dash.

Random fact:
The power shutoff switch there is the same switch used for Barndoor Bus semaphores.
So if someone needs one, that is another term to search on to find it _________________ How to Post Photos

Merci |
