Hmmmm, upon further investigation I think that you are indeed correct! It only gets to an outlet located in the rear seat vertical panel to the drivers side of the rear heater.

Thanks!

Hey Simon, couple notes on the M-Code list.

These come from my VW AutoMuseum "Birth Certificate" of my Swedish delivered 14" Syncro Doka:

M133 (still unidentified)
M218 Type label without West-Germany (whatever that means!)
M220 Differential lock, rear (which it has)
M469 Off-road package with reinforced spare-wheel pan (spare tire under rear seat)((this is a stock 14"))
M597 Battery 12V, 63 Ah (this was a gas DJ motor Doka)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Edit: Added photo.

Hi Kamzcab86, the comments in double parenthesis for M469 are related to my 14" Syncro Doka only. The M469 applies to 16" vans also. (which use a rear spare tire rack)
Thanks.

I'm trying to decode my M plate but none of my codes are on the list. I've got the manufacture date and I'm guessing FR means it was delivered to France originally and the paint code but beyond that no idea. Anyone have any idea?

The sticker on the pillar behind my drivers seat is barely hanging on these days but it is still readable (for now) and these are the codes:

WV2XA0250BH etc... (VIN)

253 031 (253 = Kombi, LHD)

CV DK (CV = Air Cooled 2.0, AFC; DK = 4 Speed Manual Transmission)

L90D LL (L90D = Pastel White)

D06 D29 508 (508 = Sliding Windows on Sliding Door and Opposite Wall)

I was able to decipher what a lot of this information means by trolling this forum for a long while and also finding these links:

http://web.archive.org/web/20021204090737/http://members.tripod.com/perlindgren/m-list.html

http://www.vanagon.com/info/vin/index.htm

http://www.club80-90.co.uk/pages/downloads/tech/Intro.pdf

Thought they might come in handy to others looking at this thread.

I am still trying to figure out what the "031", "LL", "D06", and "D29" codes mean. I am assuming the "031" might relate to seating options, the "LL" to interior colors and the "D06/D29" to fabric/floor options but they are not on any list I can find so if anyone has any insight I'd love to hear it.

I'll post this question here for I'm being forced to though I'm not hopeful of getting an answer based upon the M Code title.......... Shocked

I've noticed that the USA's Dealer system used a different option code system than VW's M Code system.

I'm trying to figure out what theses option codes mean.

I THINK ..... 425 is rear wiper.........
I THINK ......657 is Power Steering.....
I THINK ...... R82 is an audio option.... In my case a "VW Design" Cassette Player.
996 ???????

Anyone know for sure what these codes are?
Sadly, the paper sticker under the dash on the drivers side is long gone!

Here is a photo of the original delivery papers and of the metal plate under the drivers seat..........

They're not different, at least, not the ones I've seen (it wouldn't make sense for them to be different considering the Euro Delivery Program VW had: order your car at a USA/Canada dealer, go to Europe to pick it up). I've got M-code sheets (dealer created) for American-built VWs, and the codes are no different.

From page 1:
M425 - unknown
M657 - Servo Steering (aka power steering; same code used in most all '80s/'90s VWs)
M996 - unknown

R82 is radio type: Heidelberg IV - AM/FM cassette w/ auto reverse (same one my '86 Cabriolet came with). All "R" codes are radio-related.

There are numerous M-codes that have been lost to time; even VW doesn't have them in the archives. Sad

I have done the M-Plate decoder, and I have a few codes that are still unexplained, or rather, unknown (at the bottom of the page). Anyone care to weigh in?

R22 = radio type (have to look in my archives for the specifics)
Z25 = unknown

712 is an options code; the rest of the unknowns (ITI, ITJ, XS6) are most likely internal production codes and possibly specific for the German market. Be aware that there are numerous codes that even Volkswagen doesn't have records for, so some of those you may never find the meaning of. Confused

I've added Z01 to the master list.

Howdy,
Hopefully someone will indulge me in a few questions about option codes as I try and track my van's geneology in a "just because" type expedition...

Where might one find the "W" codes mentioned? I ask because my 1989 Hannover Edition ("Canadian Bluestar") was finished by Westy, with a Westy tag on the kick plate but no W-codes are seen on the 3 tags I know about. Perhaps the "Type: 216 108C" on the Westfalia tag takes the place of a "W" code in these vans to describe the interior layout?

Generally I'm just trying to figure out this option code business as it seems some options my van has are not listed on either the under-dash sticker or the under-seat tag. Also another picture of a Canadian Bluestar dash tag on the samba differs considerably from mine. The codes on both the other van and mine correspond to options both vans have, but not all options are on either tag and only some of the codes are the same on each van. For example: both vans have central locking but only the other van has the 341 code on the tag. Neither seem to have 998 on a tag but both have the electric heated mirrors. Yet they seem to be spec'd the same (plus another Canadian Bluestar I've seen up close was spec'd the same as mine AFAIK). Granted, I don't know what the seat tag says on the other Van.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out the logic of the codes, which seem to differ somewhat from identical unit to identical unit.

Mine:

The other one on the samba:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The two codes not on any lists I could find were the "MPE" (Or is it "HPE"?) and "237", the later of which is on my seat tag and the other one's dash tag. Might the M-237 described the bluestar-type package and cover the missing option codes or would the M-526 "Luxury Edition Caravelle" cover things like electric heated mirrors, Heidelberg radio...?

I guess what I'm looking for overall is:
-is there a code that says this is a Canadian Hannover Edition ("blue star"). Maybe just the Type on the Westy tag?
-Is there somewhere that shows what specific list of options it officially came with to define it as a Canadian Hannover Edition
-what options (if any) were custom-ordered.

Quite possibly this is an exercise in futility but oh well!

Sorry if I shouldn't be stepping on a sticky thread (sounds gross), just seemed the most appropriate one.
Thanks!

Anyone have any luck decoding the ones starting with "D"?

I've got an '82 Westy (blue), and the M-plate decoder was only able to decode one of them (060 - Parking heater Eberspacher BA6 or DA6). Here are the unknown ones:

D21
D41
D82
D86
P27 (a google search suggested this refers to "full camper")

Any ideas?

D codes are usually sales-related codes, as opposed to options codes; but D-level codes can be made up of one or more M-codes.

P27 = full-camper equipment as opposed to P22, which has partial camper equipment: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/82vanagon/page8.jpg .
