Are they "Fat Lip"?

Originals were from Rivera Motors for the 914 and had a "fat lip".

Mine were thin lip. Superior, the company who made them for Riveria made both styles.

Hi,

I have a set of 4 original Porsche baby gas burners but I can't get them to fit. On the back they are too wide for the arches and on the front they knock on what I think is the suspension arm.

Any suggestions?

14 inch 4x130 Dan Gurneys (thanks RichiesGarage in NJ!), powdercoated "black vein" (kind of a mottled silver with black), and "Super Traxion" tires (E78-14LT--some of the Thing folks run them). Since my ratty '69 Bug has Karmann Ghia disks on the front, I added 3/8" spacers for caliper clearance.

Well, I don't think these necessarily qualify under "best looking," but they do seem to be pretty unusual... I just acquired them from a samba seller on the west coast. They are steel, welded construction (very stout), 15" diameter x 5" wide, and with 4x130 bolting pattern... Markings indicate the manufacturer as "Armstrong R&W." That's a stock 4 1/2" wide Bug rim in one of the photos for comparison--note the difference in offset also... Their general appearance reminds me a lot of the alloy "Dan Gurney" wheels... Anyway, after refinishing they should look pretty cool--we shall see anyway...

EDIT: Did a little more googling, and it appears "Armstrong Rim & Wheel," located in Armstrong, Iowa, made wheels for agricultural and military applications. Reference: http://www.armyproperty.com/manufacturer/2T414

It appears they may still be in business, now owned by GKN: http://www.yellowpages.com/armstrong-ia/mip/gkn-armstrong-wheels-1326663

Oddball Armstrong R&W Steelies Update:

After an awesome refinishing job by my favorite local powdercoating company (Shoreline Coatings LLC of North Branford, CT), I started researching center caps, and after a couple of trials, I found some that look to fit properly...

More "Moldy Oldies" (literally!)...

Acquired these 14", 4x130, Minilite-style alloys recently from a Samba seller (thanks again Scott Hopkins from GA!). They are made by Western Wheel and are 14" diameter by 5.5" wide. Anyone know what they might've been called? It appears they were made for a number of different applications—I've found some pictures of them on Corvairs, MGs, and others, via the internet. Some additional googling also suggests a hint of Western possibly having been sued over this design (maybe by Minilite?)? Not much info out there, though...

Apparently Carroll Shelby made a Minilite-knockoff as well—see #30 on this Samba reference image: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1148530.jpg

Kind of strange that Western are a 10 spoke wheel as all the rest are 8 spoke I believe?

I don't know, Mike--maybe a deliberate attempt to avoid lawsuits (that could perhaps arise from making the copy look "too much" like the original)???

The Samba-refugee Western Minilite-style 14-inchers are now coated!

Wow, VERY pleased with the job that my favorite local powdercoating place, "Shoreline Powdercoating LLC" of North Branford, CT (http://shorelinepowdercoating.com/home/) did with my crusty/rusty Westerns! I just picked them up during lunch today, but this was a picture they posted I think yesterday, on Facebook, right when they came out of processing. The coating consists of "satin silver" with clearcoat over the top.

Picture from this past weekend, after having picked up my 14" x 5.5", 4x130 "Minilite style" Western wheels from the powdercoater (satin silver plus clear coat), and also after my trusted local garage mounted & spun-balanced some 185/65R15 redlines on refinished Porsche 914 hubcap wheels (5.5" wide, but with positive offset that tucks them in nicely). The 914 wheels got the same treatment from my favorite local powdercoater (http://shorelinepowdercoating.com/home/): satin silver plus clear coat.
