Not neccessarily. If the shutter speed is set high enough, he could swing the hammer at 100MPH and it still wouldn't blur. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

I have always had a theory about those pictures.
If you look, they are probably taken at different times on the same day.
You see the axe in all the pictures, but there is never any damage caused by it.
I have always thought it was one of the workman clowning around and pretending to cut them up as another workman took some photos.
I do believe they were dismantled and the parts possibly used elswhere.
But using wrenches, not an axe.
Sort of reminiscent of some of the comedic Herbert Kaes photos, but the joke has been lost to time and now people take them seriously.
Just my $.02

Note the one guy in the picture where he's smashing engines has a big grin. Guy in the bottom left. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Well that may be true with a 2011 DSLR (and it's not always) but back in the 30's, cameras were not as good as today.
Very dark lenses, between f4 and f8 at full opening, slow shutters and the sensibility of film being around 50 iso. Much harder to get anything moving to be sharp... _________________ Also, vanagons! |

The photographer is taking pictures in direct sunlight as indicated by the cast shadows, so he could have easily taken the picture at faster than 1/30 second shutter speed even on an old camera, especially since the aperture seems to be wide open (the objects inside the shadows are nice and detailed). Not trying to argue with you, just saying. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

Doesn't matter what camera, speed, or angle of the sun.
The pictures were taken at different times of the day and there is not a single dent made from the axe in any of the photos ! _________________ The problem with reality is that there's no background music !

That's exactly what I was thinking Richard, no damage to the cars or parts. If they were truely taking pictures to prove that these prototypes were destroyed there would have to be an after picture. |

Note the door on the work bench, bottom left, being taken to pieces... I wonder if any of these interior parts found their way to the military vehicles? |

Looking at these photos it is possible to guesstimate a date for them of 1941- 1942. The Schwimms are grey (changed to DunkelGelb mid 43) with grey canvas tops. They appear to have the large diameter headlights, probably making them '42, not sure exactly when this change took place, but probably by late '42. They also have the rounded front bumper bar instead of the later one that is straight with two angled bends in it, that made it easier to manufacture. It appears that these are awaiting drivetrain. It is also possible that these are actually Type 128's not 166's, the photos aren't great and my eyesight is poor, but that would certainly nail it down to 1941. Porsche assembled Schwimmers alongside VW at a much slower rate, the first 125 being made by Porsche before VW commenced manufacture too in may 1942. The bodies were made by AmbiBud in Berlin, VW and Porsche only completed them with the mechanical components. |

I always thought those were Type 166s, but after studying the bigger pic on the previous page, I say they are indeed Type 128s. Look at the front window. The ones in that pic are quite wide, much wider than the window for a 166.
So that means the pic is from 1941. _________________

This is going to sound like a 'whine' statement. But, i wish more people would use thesamba.com gallery's to post their pictures. Utilizing the mass posting sites such as Photobucket, Snapfish, or Flickr are popular, but their links don't work for everyone on their computers.... just pondering the thought of everyone doing this.. that way, thesamba turns into a single source point of reference for photos and information!!! _________________ '62 VW Bug Sedan (Ruby Red)

A good point, but interesting that your own signature has a photobucket link to a VW restoration, lol |
