No. That is just a regular early beam. The W30 one will look like this. Note how the beam mounting points are much closer together and at an angle.

The suspension arms also have the pinch bolt style of mounting on the torsion bar side just like the VW38's had.

Correct. Here is a close up of the W30 front suspension. I wonder if they'll be able to use the same tools that were used to re-create torsion arms for the VW38.

To give a better understanding just what we are looking at in the restoration photos here are some reference photos that the team is using. The very first W30 chassis, that of car W30/00 was extensively photographed in the front yard of the Porsche Villa, December 1936.

In November 1937 the chassis of car W30/13 was also photographed in the garden of the Porsche Villa.

Amazing.
When did they go to a wide 5 bolt pattern?

They went to the wide 5 wheels for the v303. These were the three beetles shown at the factory cornerstone laying ceremony.

There is some evidence that the first use of wide-five pattern was for the military concept that was called The Stuka. It was built in January 1938 and presented to the military on 1st February 1938. That is months before the V303 cars were unveiled in May that year. More than likely The Stuka used the W30 chassis. This is covered in pages 211 to 223 of Barber's book.

It was the military that demanded that wheel rims should be standartised over civilian and military vehicles. The W30 used 3.00 x 17 inch rims with five bolt pattern that was the same as used on some Mercedes-Benz cars. In fact the rims in the W30 are very similar to those of the MB 170H. It kind of makes sense as the W30 cars were built at the MB Sindelfingen factory.

Not sure why exactly the wide five bolt pattern was chose for all further VW prototypes. Some German cars at the time already used is such as Opel. It appears The Stuka and the first three V303 cars were built on the W30 chassis with new design brake drums installed that would fit the wide-five pattern rims.

Time for another update. The floor-pans are nearing completion. This is starting to look like a proper chassis.

It's coming together very quickly indeed. No wonder it sat for years waiting for the moment when the team will be ready to tackle this project. Huge amounts of research has been done in between. Looking forward to HO21 even more now!

Another small update. The team at Hessisch Oldendorf have been busy. The spare wheel holder which is an integral part of the chassis frame head, is finally taking proper shape. Check out the 1936 Mercedes wheel rim.

The wheel rim sits on three studs and a central bolt with a holding disk still needs to be made just like in the photo below.

Since the prototypes were made in the MB factory, I suppose they made liberal use of their parts bin back then. Will this MB wheel be part of this build then?

I think that this setup wouldn't do any good for the car's NCAP score =)

Looking closely at photos of MB cars from 1935/37 lots of little details can be seen that look suspiciously like ones used on the W30 cars. Little things like door and window winder handles, headlights, electric switches, gauges etc.
It makes perfect sense to use non-essential parts from a bin of available items for a very limited run of prototypes.

More than likely those wheel rims will be used for this project.
