Yes but you are missing the point. That picture was taken around 1960. That means whoever took the picture has a 1936 head to photograph.

Or had just pictures of a 1936 head and used them along with pics made of newer heads.

Back in the 50s 60s they cut and glued and brushed photos and negatives all the time. Not by computer of course, literally with scissors.

Right; we're both in agreement. (Here in the US typesetters (as they were called before desktop publishing sent the photostat camera, internegatives scissors and lettraset labels the way of the record player and phone booth)...referred to the process as "key lining" - {compositing multiple images into one final version which goes to printers}. Awe inspiring work on a notably historic project! Cool
Thanks for updates. Exclamation Keep up the progress!

I have often pondered over this question. The thing is that many photos were made of the E60 and other engines and their components back in the 30's, including detailed photos of items such as fractured crank shafts. But I have never seen this same photo as part of a collection of photos known to have been taken in 1936.

Therefore I have also considered that it may have survived as a component and been photographed later.

I hope they have saved at least one head from the early days, but it is also possible that it is just a drawing that we see. Back in the day's they also often used airbrush to adjust picts.

That's no drawing or airbrush artwork. One interesting detail is that all three heads have one sparkplug installed in the same position and the other position is empty.

Some more updates. How cool does this chassis look! The seats were scratch-built according to drawings and photos.

Too right, mate! What leaves me in awe is the attention to all the nerdy details like the stuff that will never see the light of day once everything is completed. Still they make sure it's done right. Just like with the VW38/06 project.

That's the difference between a true, historic restoration and a show car. I think their main motivation is accuracy above all else.

Another (very exciting) update. The front beam and steering is tried in. The beam of course will have to be built entirely from scratch. Lots of parts will need to be fabricated. Good news is that some brake bits may be taken from the period Mercedes parts bin.

A long awaited update. How good does this look? Still a lot of work to be done though.

What's supporting the steering wheel in fresh air? Invisible fishing line? All looks good.

Just caught up with this amazing build up of the W30 floorpan (chassis). Crazy detailing, probably going to take years to finish, but it's in the right hands!

The Genesis of VW in the flesh. So cool to see it not as a drawing or fuzzy black and white picture!
