Gen light came back on Thursday morning. Then yesterday car started hesitating in third gear. By the end of the night hesitating in second gear. Finally got a chance to open the lid and take a peak. Was planning on just checking the points, cleaning them if needed, checking the bushings and then cleaning the copper bits in the generator.

Upon opening the lid, I notice that the distributor cap isn't even latched down, open it up and am met with this beauty.

I'm a pack rat, saved the one I tossed in before getting an entirely new distributor. Go me for saving stuff!.

Gen light is still on though.......tomorrows job.

How probable is that the latches dislodged from the cap on their own? She was in shop about a month ago. TBH looking at the torched rotor I'm amazed she stayed running enough to even get me home last night.

I doubt it unlatched itself. It's probably been like that for a month.

Check the brushes on the gen first. They should stand up above the brush holder by at least a 1/4 inch.
If they're still above the holder, then I'd look at the VR next.

Original material. I got these from https://www.vwispwest.com/. I had the metal parts refinished so took off the original blankets.

ISP West had these in the back somewhere. A bit expensive, since the early type 3 heat exchangers without the flaps are almost impossible to find. I lucked out. It's true that blind squirrels sometimes do find a nut. Smile Thank you ISP West!

I have a set of blankets from the heat exchangers I took off the motor. These are the later types with the flaps that were wired opened. The metal bits are rusted and not really serviceable. The blankets are in good shape, almost like the ones in the pics. (No oil stains but more gray in color.) If anyone is interested, send me an email or IM.

Repaired renewed the insulation in the engine compartment lid. It is a lil quieter now. Easy to do.

I drove my Notchback for the first time this year and it ran great after replacing a few parts.

I knew the fuel pump needed to be rebuilt when I put it in storage last November and I had bought a type 1 pump awhile ago to use while I rebuild the stock one.

Yesterday I installed the fuel pump and it now pumps fuel much better then the OG FP ever has, but there was almost no spark coming from the coil and the Notch would not start.

So today I put the new coil in, fully thinking that it would be to easy if all worked after installing the new coil, and the Notch started right up!

The Notch is on the road again and drove really well.

Yea, I know how it goes. I have one of those too, haha.

Sunlight, shorts, vivid green plants that get enough sun to grow normally, all make it look like it was a pretty good change.
