So, my Bentley says the 2.1 puts out 90hp. A google search turns up 95hp. Could someone verify what my 97 is rated at? I'm 90% certain a minor change was made to the 2.1 that upped it to 95 but I need to be certain for a mysterious reason that will come up again later. Thanks. I wouldn't ask except that if I'm wrong it will be 100% embarrassing later.

Still got your owners manual? I would think that would be accurate...maybe? Other than that idea, I'm of no help with my lowly 1.9L Crying or Very sad Cruising 35 up to A-Basin today was brutal.

Man, if you got some skiing in today then I'm having zero pity on you! None!

It didn't come with the owner's manual, and I've been keeping my eye out for a used one. So, the Bentley's all the published and printed info I have at the moment.

The '86 and '87 were rated at 95 hp, in '88 the rating system changed and all subsequent 2.1's were rated at 90 hp. The engines are identical though. So technically you have the 'high output' US 2.1. Laughing

When my brother was driving his AC vanagon camepr he always said "it takes the 1st 100hp just to get these down the road, and we're starting under the curve"
like RMW said, not enough...

I'm convinced that that 95 hp is in dog years.

Factor in the miles and wear and tear. So technically it is probably lower unless you just did a rebuild. These factors=a decrease in HP.

I always felt better about the power ratings on my VW engines if I converted from HP to SP (Squirrel Power). It's been a few years since I took VolksMath, but I think the conversion is HP*1024, which puts your power at around 92,160 SP.

i was searching for wheel horsepower the other day and could not find any. But I would guess the HP at the wheels is about 70% to 75% of the crank HP. So as an example 95 hp equates to about 68.4 WHP using 72%.

I have seen a dyno for a subura legacy and a subaru powered buggy. Both had the EJ22 engine rated at 135 hp (at the crank) The legacy put out 95 WHP, the buggy put out 100.5 WHP.
here is the dyno of the buggy:

None of those numbers are impressive at all. I think Bostig used to have a stock vanagon dynp result posted on their website....i will look for it.

You might have the HP of your engine stamped on it. Mine is stamped on the engine close to where the top bolt on the left (US drivers-side) that fastens the gearbox to the engine is located. Close to the plugged hole into the bellhousing.

The operator only dared rev her up to 4900rpm as there is no tachometer fitted!! Don't know if there would have been a few more bhp if he had?
