|
|
Ok, so I have alot of threads on here, and this is kind of odd. The Van is cold(motor), and no pressure light, van warms up, pressure light comes on... running 20w50 in the van. Light does not blink, it spazez out. Do I:
A: Go higher in weight oil?
B: Change oil pressure sender to new one of diff value?
C: Ignore the idiot light and pray my engine doesn't blow up?
She runs fine, no issues with power after warming up, just kinda bothers me. PO said that the light always blinked when he had it.

Mike, First don't run it any more than you have too until you figure out what's going on.
Check oil level
disconnect the lead to the Oil Pressure Sensor and run it around the block ( looking for grounding of lead) if not light
Replace the OPS
if it still lights up, you have no oil pressure. don't run it.
Possible worn oil pump
What's happening as the oil warms the viscosity lowers and the motor tolerances increase (main Bearings) and basically there is no restriction to raise the oil pressure.
Then the Motor Blows UP.
Good luck |

Get a gauge, or buy the gauge kit from Van-cafe. That will give you a heck of a lot more information to go on.
You have two OP switches, both can be disconnected and a jumper wire to ground used to test the functionality of the rest of the circuit. One of them is normally closed, the other normally open. Tencent has a great post on this.

Scroll down and look for the long post by Tencentlife, after that you'll know as much as any VW engineer about how the dynamic OP system works and how to test it. _________________ -Matt

"Some people have reported that Fram and other non-VW oil filters cause higher pressure drops because of restrictive flow. Try a VW "Autobahn" oil filter. "

"The simple solution to this problem is to use Mann, Mahle or Autobahn brand oil filters."

Year ago I had the same problem and installing a quality filter fixed it. _________________ '87 Syncro Westfakia, 1.9TD ADE (AAZish), 068 Injection Pump, K03 turbo, 2.5" exhaust, Mercedes nozzles, SAAB Blackstone charge-cooler w/ 800cfm fan, Micro-1000 EGT sensor pre-turbo, boost at about 13psi, 235/70/16 with stock gearing |

One switch under the water pump pulley (grey), and one between the pushrod tubes on the drivers side (brown). You'll have to take off the sheet metal shield under the pushrod tubes to get at that one. Here's the wiring until you get yourself a Bentley manual

Ok read farther down that thread.. Found my HP switch, adn it works great... But now, after running it, the LP switch is making my light blink.... Go figure, maybe replace it and see where that takes me...
Thanks for the pic. It helps.. Got to love Volkswagon wire diagrams _________________ 1987 Vanagon GL 2.1 Flat Stanley (present)

While you're down under looking at your LP sender, plug in a pressure tester ($10 - Harbor Freight) and get a real number after the engine's HOT.
Don't spend all your time trying to turn off the light saying you have low OP...because YOU MAY HAVE LOW OP.
What's your mileage? Another link for you & the rest of world:
http://volksweb.relitech.com/21rodbrg.htm
Upshot: HOT OP @ idle should be above 4psi or your engine is not long for this world.
Check your number & do something before you blow up another 2.1 PLUS lose almost $1000: what your engine core WAS worth.
Good luck... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

I had this problem on a van I had. Changed out two Fram filters that kept the light on. Switched to Mann filters and never had a problem again. |
