Figured i would post some a pic of my new bus.... Picked it up this morning and drove it to the shop.... I first saw the bus 3 years after following a lead from a guy at a local auto parts store... it was in a self storage facility; the management would not divulge the owners info.... regardless it finally worked out.
58 kombi, purchased new in new york, then it went to CA, then
Colorado, then to me. Came with the original owners manual, North America dealer list, and the paperwork from where a factory rebuilt engine was installed. The PO was/ is a super nice guy.
Dash is uncut,
Original trans i believe,
front and rear pressed bumpers
radio delete plate
36 hp crank start engine complete with tin but with end-play
jack
1600sp which seems to be running ok but needs a tune up...
5 original wheels with the correct dates
Its easily the most solid bus i've ever had, some rust in the rockers and doglegs but the cargo area is super nice and so is the engine compartment. I would like to drive it to a local show in mid april, i don't think i will have a problem getting it there. My plans are as follows;
-full brake job,
-pull the engine and clean it up. oil change, plugs, wires, bla, bla...
-see if i can sort through the wiring... its a bit odd.
-get to scrubbing with the CLR and see what's hiding under there.
-I called about some tires, hope to have them in a few days 6.70 x 15 firestones
more pictures to come, I'll start scrubbing with CLR tomorrow.

Congrats on the perseverance payoff. It's a good-looking bus.
I hope to see you at the April show. Better yet, I hope my '65 deluxe is roadworthy by then. I don't see it happening, but ya never know. |

It looks solid. Once upon a time you woulda' been arrested for driving that, now it's considered better than most; a real score. Did you nag them into submission? |

thanks for the nice words, I'm excited! as for nagging them into submission... I wish! I went by the self storage place at least once every other month for the past 3 years and left my card, name, phone number, e-mail, etc. with them... they never gave me so much as a first name. The PO actually posted it for sale here. I about had a panic attack when i saw the ad.
Got to mess with it a bit today, green scotch bright pads and scrubbed it down with CLR... If you have never used that stuff it's pretty amazing. It says to use rubber gloves; that lasted about 15 min and they were in the trash can. It tingles a bit when it runs down your arm... but it didn't eat off any fingers.
I found that 400(ish) sandpaper seemed to work a bit better than the green pads... It removed the stains a bit quicker and seemed easier on what is left of the dove blue. I uncovered where it had been sanded down to the bare metal and then sprayed with some white paint/ primer.... sort of sucks but I should be able to blend some grey primer back in.
Snapped a picture of it next to a RV I spent all last week working on. Sort of puts it in to perspective just how large they are, still not sure why they have to be so big... the "patina" look will be my backlash from having to making things look like new again all day
pulled the bumpers, i'm going to see if i can straighten them out a bit. they are not torn, but they are definitely wiggly. Thats more or less it... I need to order some brake parts and find glass for the rear hatch. if anyone has an extra send me a PM. need to pull the engine and clean everything up, the wiring is jacked, and i will need to figure out what rust i want to cut out... One thing at a time though.
I have been going back and forth between clear coating it when i'm done scrubbing or just buffing it and rubbing the rust down with some sort of oil. Currently I'm leaning towards the clear coat.... any of you have expierience with this?

I personally dont care for the sheen that clear coat has on patina'd rigs. I would lightly buff & wax the original paint. BTW Beautiful Bus !! |

cool patina!
i don't think i would clearcoat either. try some waxoyl on the rust, or just wax over it. linseed oil would also keep it from rusting. i liked the results on my bus rubbing a little grease over the rusty spots, then rubbing off the excess with another rag. i would clearcoat as my last option _________________ WANTED:

just say no to clearcoat, you can flatten it to get some gloss off of it,but it will never adhere correctly and it will flake and peel and you will realize you didnt save patina...but ruined it,wax or waxoil (wurth) is the best way to preserve what you have, great bus, have fun _________________ Have a great day! |

Cool bus but (and I know this will go over like a fart in church), I wouldn't worry about saving the "paint" on it since there isn't much to begin with. I'd lose the rust and paint it.
The "patina" in this case is just rust and I'd be more concerned with stopping it and preserving the bus. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

i sort of agree and disagree,to get into repainting this bus you will need alot of cash and time and skills or hire it out, also it will need rust repair that really turns into the rabbit hole that never seems to end...
or you could drive it and enjoy it as is with what little paint it has, some like it some dont, your bus for me teeters on the fence either way,it doesnt have enough paint to be "nice". i guess i would be torn either way if it was my bus,i might even consider some paint fade _________________ Have a great day! |
