A couple of weeks ago I changed a head on my van along with some other things.
The exhaust had to come off, along with a heat exchanger, since I had to take one off I took the other one off to.
I cleaned and put new gaskets on both of them.
I had when through my heater system two or so years ago and pretty much rebuilt it.
I have a cheap EMPI header an muffler on and it has always been a pain getting it to seal at the exchangers.
The gaskets that came with the exhaust just plain sucked, lasted about a week.
So after a good fight with OEM gaskets I got it to seal and work like it was supposed to.
Well I was worried about getting it sealed again this time.
I took my time got all new parts, put it all together, and it was running great!
Took it for a test run, and the heat was kicking and smell free!
Then I decided a treat was in order, because my other test pilot was hungry (young son).
While idling in the drive thru, all of a sudden it started to stink and I started to fume.
Well I knew I had to find a better gasket, and here’s what I came up with:
Mr. Gasket 5960 Ultra Seal Exhaust Gasket Material
http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.+Gasket/720/5960/10002/-1
It’s not cheap, and you get enough for about 6 or 8 gaskets, but it works.
I cut my gaskets out this morning and have been driving around all day and the heat is working like it should now.

Here’s: the new gaskets I cut, and the ones I took off.

The top one sealed good, looks the same on the other side, but you can see the blow-by in the bottom one, it’s only on one side to.
Just enough of a leak to make your eyes water and your wife hate the heater.

It's a cheap Empi extractor, it's only about two months old, and I just took it out of the box and bolted it on, they are kind of disposible.

the gasket kit seems pretty rad, thanks for the tip.

as far as disposable for the muffler goes, do you mean "crap" or "economical"?

It's crap, but if you can fix the shortcomings like the gaskets, It will last a few years before it rusts out.
It is more freeflow then stock.
