I picked up my 1960 double cab 5 years ago next month. I first posted pictures on TheSamba a few years back and fellow Samba member told me that he knew where my double cab came from. He remembered seeing it in Arlington Texas in front of this bar. The bar was called Skippy's Mistake and was owned and operated by Skippy. Skippy also owned a 23 window and usually had them both in front of the bar back in the mid 80's and early 90's. The truck was used for Skippy's band call Skip N The Rent. When I got the truck I thought it was a parts runner, because the logo looked to me looked like "Heren" It also has another logo underneath it that says Volkswagen on the bed side. The pictures below show the complete logo with Skippy's band. I found Facebook and Myspace pages called Skippy's Mistake with a few pictures of my double. I am trying to contact Skippy to see where he got the truck from.

Interesting facts
1. Over 160 bands performed at the bar, some of them very famous (The Birds, Cafe Noir, Spankin Rufus, etc.), and some very adroit folks wandered through, including Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughn, Jimmy Carl Black (the Indian drummer for the Mothers of Invention), Marchel Ivory, etc.

2. The Mistake was the first inland sand court in Texas, and led that wave of popularity between 1985 and 1990. When the wave finally peaked and beached, even Mexican boot-scoot joints along the county line in GP had an outdoor sand court.

3. Over the years the bar raised more than $100,000 in charity for MDA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers & Sisters, etc.

4. Involved in some ten campaigns and forty proposed city ordinances, over half of which we helped defeat or pass, the Mistake also spawned PIP, or the Politically Incorrect Party, which was a severe pain in the sides of folks like Richard Greene and Rocky Dalton and Dotti Lynn. James plans to recount some of the PIP adventures, as he still has notes and was involved in many of their pranks.

Question for the DC owners... Working on my gates. Are the DC side gates factory curved outward on the top side, and straight on the bottom?

'63. It appears to me the tops are naturally bent outward... but a little rough, so not sure. Anyone have a NOS or near perfect set they can give me an idea of the deflection? Also, I would assume the bottoms are straight to match the bed?

No, they should be as straight as the edge of the bed. They BECOME curved, but didn't arrive that way.

Should be ice picks normally but your doors will tell! If they have one hole it's ice picks if it has 2 holes then it would be the later style!Depending if ur bus is a late or early 63!

Very nice, not lowered and nice paint patina. Like the upholstery as well. Nice score!

My Bus is an early 64, has ice picks (15" wheels too), I would think all 63's would be ice pick.

Purchased in April from a nice lady in Ranch Cucamonga CA, said she got from her grandfathers estate. Stored in an apartment garage on Spruce St. in Compton for 25 years. Last 6 years in her garage. Almost zero rust, but dented metal everywhere, drivers side is worst area. Has replacement doors, singlepac exhaust and custom Z signage I think from a horse farm. White rattlecan primer sprayed here and there. Gates are solid. No bumpers, no wipers or wiper motor and missing a driver rear view mirror. Motor has compression, og trans, rgb's, seats...odd reverse lites in back. Anyone seen this one before? thanks
